August 2024 by Rachel Cormier
I recently tried going back after avoiding this location for years, and was reminded why I stopped in the first place - food on the shelves is consistently past expiration.
The first time, I saw patches of blue mold on the sandwich rolls stacked in front of the deli counter. It was summer and humid, and breads can be at a particular disadvantage, so I alerted someone (shocked they hadn’t already seen it), and let it slide. Then it was expired yogurt - I had purchased it that day, neglecting to check the expiration because I was purchasing it THAT day. The next time it was English muffins that were moldy right out of the package the day after I purchased.
The straw that broke the camel’s back was three bags of fresh black mussels purchased at the fish counter. They seal them fairly tightly in a thick plastic bag, so I didn’t notice any smell until I was loading my groceries into the car, and at that point caught a faint whiff of what I believed to be a dead mussel. It’s normal to have a dead one or two in a bag, so I thought nothing of it…until I got home and opened that thick plastic bag they were wrapped in and and got the full sensory experience. Checked the shellfish tags, and they’d been harvested over TWO WEEKS PRIOR. Having worked in food service for decades, I know that 3 days is the rule of thumb for fresh shellfish, and they had sold me mussels that had easily been dead and rotting for at minimum a week and a half.
The staff seemed unsurprised and nonchalant when I called them. They refunded me without hassle, but it seemed like this was old hat for them - no apology for the inconvenience, no “we’ve let the manager know and they’re going to talk to the staff at the fish counter about checking tags”. Literally nothing. I stopped shopping after that, but they’re so close to my house that I begrudgingly tried again.
I just received my instacart order placed this morning. The ONLY perishable item I purchased was butter, having learned not to trust their perishables. Of course, when unloading my order, I noticed that the butter’s best by date was May of 2024. It’s August. I’m done.

I am sick of self checkout. When I go here I usually have to wait 10ish minutes in line because only 1 register will have a cashier, and only half the time they will have a bagger. Today they had no cashiers, only self checkout available

Great store! Shelves are stocked and produce always looks fantastic. One of the few store that sells Napa cabbage. Layout is different and I find myself spending more time in there. I’ve not had a bad experience.

I had a similar experience to Twigstoveafficianado. I couldn’t agree more. As someone who has also experienced discrimination at this location, I can relate to the frustration. Having lived in Medfield for many years, I have not encountered such treatment anywhere else. Unfortunately, the workers here seem to have a tendency to discriminate against individuals based on their appearance or work uniform. In my experience, if you are a person of color or not dressed in a way that fits their expectations, you are treated differently, with extreme rudeness and dismissiveness. They constantly watch you, as if suspecting you of stealing. This is totally unacceptable and reflects how poorly on the store's values. I urge the management to recognize the importance of treating all customers with respect and dignity, regardless of their background or attire. I hope they take these reviews seriously and address this ongoing issue. Until then, I would advise anyone who has faced similar treatment to consider shopping elsewhere.

Absolutely horrible staff. They are rude every time I go there. No training in customer service. Even the manager is nasty. I won't shop there again.

Hi. I’m a contract worker who works in medfield in many different capacities so I’m in this town a lot. I work for really nice bunch of clientele here in town. Every time I pop in here for something real quick, the check out staff almost snub their noses at me which happened again today. This has been happening for the last 18 years I’ve been going in there. I don’t know if it’s my work uniform or what but these checkers act as though i have snakes for hair and I’m actually a really nice guy. If you’re a contractor, it seems like THIS shaws doesn’t want your business.

Shaw’s is unsafe? Stopped byShaw’s Sunday night at 8:20p and the main entrance was locked. Looked inside and saw people working and shopping. Saw someone exit the store via the small side entrance and went inside. Asked cashiers if they were still open and why the main entrance was locked. Was told that they have to lock the main entrance for “safety reasons and it’s been a crazy night.” Maybe a police detail should be hired if employees feel unsafe in their workplace.

It's on my way to work, so I would stop here fairly regularly, just to pick up a few things. But they no longer have express lines, and they'll only have one register open, sometimes two. I keep finding myself in lines behind people with full carriages of groceries. I'll wait for a few minutes, but the lines move slow and just get longer. The employees are all doing other things, not paying attention. I usually end up abandoning my basket of groceries and walking out. If you can't have an employee check me out, you can have an employee put my groceries back.
