The staff there are amazingly helpful and so positive. Every time I've ever gone to HBE I've always felt valued as a customer. Recently took my bike here for an update to tires before a quickly planned out of state bike trip. They were also able to replace brake pads, adjust cables and do what was needed with a great turn around time. Took a ride yesterday and my bike rode like new (it's about 10-12 years old).

Great service, knowledgeable, friendly, prompt. Top notch bike shop. Did a full retool of my old surly cross check 9 months ago, reasonable price, and the thing is still happily running great after hundreds of miles.

Great shop and fantastic staff! Such knowledgeable people who get to know what type of riding you do and how best to help set you up for that. They do great jobs building up frames to suit your needs.

I bought my Giant Fathom mountain bike at HBE a bit over a year ago. Since this was a significant purchase for me, Alex worked extensively with me to make sure the bike suited my experience, preferences, goals, and budget, and a year later, I can attest that he knocked it out of the park.
Service after the sale has also been great. They helped me with a warranty issue for the suspension fork, performed a thorough safety inspection after a crash for a reasonable fee, and accommodated my request for a seal upgrade during routine fork service. They’re also happy to shoot the breeze about bike stuff from time to time, despite being a busy shop. I really appreciate how they patiently accommodate bike nerds like me, while also being accessible to customers of all experience, budget, and interest levels.

It was super helpful! New bikes and used older models, the workers are super knowledgeable. They helped me pick out my bike based on my biking plans and talked through any additional equipment I asked about. If I make any alterations to my bike I'll definitely go right back to them!

Decided to give myself (and my bike) a break and have someone else tune it up. Called to check if HBE required an appt and they said to bring it in. I dropped it that morning and they said they’d text me in a week when it was done. They texted two hours later. They installed new brake lines, new gear lines, a new cassette, a new chain, new tires and tubes, adjusted my seat, and re-wrapped my handlebars (and provided she and astute advice when I picked it up). They seriously rock. I can’t say how happy I was to ride a beautifully tuned bike on a February day. Thanks, HBE!

I assembled my bike myself at first, but the right break did not work. So, I came to this bike shop to get it checked over again. They said "all done" so I went there to pick it up. After I picked it up, I brought it to my place. After I rode the bike for 2 mins, the seat started to shake hard. The seat started to move. I was on the bike road ( next to the car road) when I was riding the bike, which was the first time to ride it after I picked it up. I fell down as I lost my center of gravity when I realized it. Still cannot believe how this basic thing was not checked even though I paid about $90 for this whole check up. I got hurt on my left leg and hip. Most of all, it ruined my day because of their non-professional work. They said two guys usually check it before pickup...but wait what...? How can I trust them..? I highly recommend you NEVER go to this shop if you care about safety. It is my first time that I DO want to leave my review with "unlimited negative stars".

Wonderful bike shop. The staff are super helpful, friendly, and go out of their way to solve problems. They have really good selected new bikes here - that is, not the widest selection, but they have carefully chosen the best of commuter bikes, road bikes, gravel bikes etc - the best inexpensive and mid-range bikes. Their knowledge shows. My wife bought a sweet Kona bike here, nice wide, deep tires, great gearing. And they have a good amount of USED bikes - all in great shape, cheaper than new. Also lots of kids bikes. Two times, when I needed just some specialized screws for my own bike job, they went out of their way to find them, and charged nothing one time, a pittance the other. I highly recommend this place, the mechanics and staff are great.

I agree with Tony's impression. The folks are knowledgable and helpful, but only if you seek their help. I spent quite a bit of money on a new bike for my son and had to pull information out of them as far as what we needed to know, if there was an instruction manual, and if there was anything he might need for his bike. They produced a manual but offered no suggestions about accessories. When we got home with the new bike we realized we had no lock, no water bottle holder, nothing to attach for carrying items, no bell, no mirror, nor headlight or taillight. It would have been helpful to suggest these things as possible options and then show us our choices along the wall. Now we have to go back to purchase these items. I mentioned this to the manager who just shrugged and laughed. She seemed to agree that the staff is not into offering information or selling items, but didn't feel it was a concern.

I've been a customer for about 3-4 years and bought my two recent bikes from them, a Jamis gravel bike and a Giant mountain bike. Both were previous year leftovers and fairly priced (though neither time did they mention they were the previous year's model); the Giant was ever so slightly used, with upgraded pedals, seat and bar, in like-new condition but $250 cheaper than the current year's model and even better looking. I went for it and no regrets, the Giant looks and has run flawless. Both times an employee had come outside to help me, sized up my needs and directed me towards these two bikes. They scored a bull both times, very happy with the bikes. I've also been in for various things like tires tubes spokes and accessories and can say a few things about their service: One, they're very "covid conscious" and demand mask wearing in the store, well after everyone else has laxxed on masks. Two, they're not unfriendly in any way but I have yet to hear a "Can I help you" as I browse around. They never even seem to acknowledge I'm in the store until I ask them something. I'm personally ok with that but be aware thats how they roll, if you want help, ask for it. They seem very honest and earnest about biking, you can tell this isn't just work for them they love biking Overall they are very knowledgeable and very helpful, if you ask them first. Their prices are competitive and they understand what the customer needs. I would keep buying bikes from them and would definitely recommend giving them a try if your looking for a new or used bike

I got a bike from here over 5 years ago. The people I dealt with were sketchy. I didn't trust what they told me. I only bought the bike (1990s Cannondale mountain bike) because I had it vetted by a friend who is a bike mechanic. Later, I happened to be in a bike shop about 10 miles away and mentioned to the mechanic that I had gotten a bike from Hampshire Bicycle Exchange. He went on and on about how terrible Hampshire Bicycle Exchange was. About how they sold bikes that were not properly tuned to people. Wow, what an unprompted tirade. Granted this was over 5 years ago, but it was so egregious, that I would still be very suspicious if I were go to Hampshire Bicycle Exchange again. Hampshire Bicycle Exchange mostly sells cheap vintage bikes to UMass students who need something for very short rides. Most people, including myself, know nothing about vintage bikes. It's easy to be cheated. If you really want a cheap used bike, there are better, honest bike shops to go to such as Laughing Dog Bicycles **one mile away** or Full Circle Bike Shop in Florence. I always recommend to people to check out multiple bike shops regardless. For valuing vintage bikes, go to
