Although it is slightly more expensive than Home Depot, I am very happy with the quality of lumber/materials, assistance in the lumber yard, and in-store assistance. Since I am not a tradesman in any way it is a bit intimidating to take on home projects and I am happy with the assistance from the office staff on my last couple of visits. They were also very helpful over the phone in recommending potential contractors in the area for a house project. So far happy to support this local business.

Pros: great selection and quality of lumber. Paint department is solid, generally helpful.Cons: the staff. Some new hires at the front desk are helpful. Otherwise, 9 times out of 10, whether on the phone or in person, both my wife and I have been treated rudely, and this consistent over the last ~8 years or so.I want to do business with Cowls rather than the big box stores a few miles away, but it just results with rude employees who treat us like we're putting them out for asking questions as simple as, "do you have this tool / replacement hardware."I'd skip this store, unless you like being treated like dirt.

the guy who helped me was extremely friendly and really went out of his way. they certainly know a lot about building and can help with technical problems. they don't have the largest selection of individual screws and bolts and such in the universe but I'm not sure other hardware stores in the area are better. I haven't been to many yet. in any case it's a lot more manageable than Home Depot and it has probably most of what someone would need for most jobs. I'll go to Home Depot only when I have to :-)

I used to think that Cowls only carried wood. That was a long time ago. Now I know they carry more than most of the big chains around, and I know that by purchasing it from here that I'm doing a good thing for local business and that I'm keeping my money local, as opposed to some CEO in a faraway place. I can't tell you how many times I look for something either in home repair or new construction, and Cowls always has what I need! With competitive pricing, and really awesome staff, Cowls should be your One stop shop for all materials for building and construction. A+++!!!

Best lumber yard I've ever dealt with, and I've dealt with quite a few. Yeah, they're nicer than most of the rest, but I've also bought lumber there that cost LESS than the big boxes or even online mill-direct places and was much higher quality. I don't how they do it, but they do. I wish they'd expand to both sides of the river!

So glad I discovered them, bc Cowls is the best lumberyard I've ever dealt with bar none, and I've dealt with quite a few. They sell better quality than the big box stores and even the direct-from-the-mill online places, they bring it to your site, and they're usually less expensive. And every person I've dealt with at Cowls is smart, helpful, and interesting. I hope they open up a second store on the west side of the river!

A big reason I chose to shop at Cowls over other big box stores like Home Depot or Lowe's is to support local small businesses. Cowls is far from that, owned by the largest private landowner in MA, it is local but not small. Additionally, while big box stores offer a full return policy no question asked you don't have that same protection at Cowls. It's great for picking up small things but I would urge you to consider big box stores for larger purchases.

The staff are knowledgeable and pleasant and the lumber is exceptional. Only four stars because the hours are not friendly to homeowners; one day with evening hours would be beneficial to DIYers.
