Glad it is shut down. One of the worst gyms I have ever been to. The bathrooms were filthy. The workers there were not helpful when needed assistance. And I never got a tour of the place. I had to explore the place myself.

Gym has been closed for several months now, they keep charging my account and there is no way to get a hold of them.

Absolutely do not sign up for this gym.... I cancelled my membership about 2 years ago. I went in in-person signed the paperwork and was supposedly cancelled. 6 or so months later after I already moved out of the state I saw they were still charging me. I called them and cancelled over the phone and the guy told me it was cancelled. Then after moving into the new house getting settled I realized I was still being charged so I called them again and the lady told me it was cancelled. This time I watched closer and they still didn't cancel my membership and still was being charged. This time I called them again and my credit card company to stop all payments from them in January and then today received collections for $380 on a $20 membership. January to to April should be a maximum 4months X $20 = $80 worst case scenario. This is on top of all the months I've already paid after I've moved to another state. Absolute scam never sign up here

All gyms are closed due to covid-19. Been trying to get into contact with this gym, no answer and of course, a full voicemail box. Still continuously charged for the monthly plan while closed. Stop this nonsense.

Ok equipment, good price, but the hours have been getting shorter and shorter. They have building issues that are dragging on multiple weeks. The hours they are now open makes the gym nearly unusable. I won't signing up again.

I've been with retro for over two years, and have had two years to experience this gym for this review. First off, it is one of these no frills gym, no pools, no saunas, no super fancy things. What you come here for is your workout. They have tons of cardio machines and a weight area. Two squat racks and a smith machine. I usually come here during the morning or early afternoon and very rarely have to wait to use weights or the machines. They also have stuff like two kicking bags, sparring equipment, jump rope, stuff for TRX, a variety of handles, and belt supports. They have a tanning machine but it's not anywhere private...a kids club, group exercises or an extra fee a month. They also have a smoothie bar! I would in addition, recommend you download their app, they have a point system in which you can redeem things such as smoothies or a free month of workout. They also have challenges you can join, and if you meet that goal be entered for a prize. What I really enjoyed about this place is the no frills concept. It's also a smaller gym so it feels pretty intimidate, you see and greet the same people that's been working out along side with you, and it makes you feel part of a community. Never really had any complaints, just that maybe some of the protective layering of machines are coming off, and that the yoga mats need replacement.

I highly recommend this gym. It's by far the best bang for the buck and the staff is amazing!

I like Retro. I think the staff are friendly, there is a good variety of machines, and the parking situation is stress-free (a rare commodity in the DC area). I'm kinda retro in the way I like to workout; I don't need classes, or pools, or massage chairs, or anything like that. I just want some weights to lift, and occasionally some bikes, treadmills, or elliptical machines for cardio. I would say: your experience will really depend on what you're looking to do there. On cardio days, even at peak times, I rarely have trouble finding an elliptical or treadmill to use. I can spend 30 minutes on the equipment, and nobody is shoving me off to get their turn. It's really nice, and you can accurately plan how long your gym session will be. However, I prefer using the free weights, and it is often challenging to use much of the equipment without significant wait times. Even on weekend afternoons when almost nobody is in the gym, you still have to wait in line to use a bench or a squat rack. On a Sunday, looking to do 2-3 sets of barbell bench press, and both flat benches were being used... one gym goer had "just 5 more sets", the other was in a similar situation, but was at least willing to allow me to work-in with them. Squat racks are even worse, which I've often had to wait behind groups of 3 or 4 people, each doing 5 or 6 sets a piece. It's kind of crazy, especially when you're like me and only doing a total of 20-25 reps on that piece of equipment. I used to workout in the morning at the Lanham location, which was closer to my job at that time. That job started at 9AM, so I could get to the gym by 7:45 AM, and have plenty of time to exercise, shower, and get to the office. And, there was almost never wait times on any of the equipment. Now, I workout at the Kensington/Rockville location, closer to home, and my new job is also nearby, but my new work schedule starts at 8AM, and I don't think I can consistently make it to the gym by 6:45 AM to mirror my old routine. Because of this, I am working out in the evening, lifting 3-4 days, and the struggle to just to do a handful of squats or bench presses is a regular occurrence. Like I said, overall it's a really nice place to workout. The employees are nice, knowledgeable, and helpful. And the value of what you get compared to how inexpensive it is to join, it is hard to beat. But, I wish they could do something about people camping out on the weight equipment so everyone can use it.

Ever since Tim left this place as manager around 2014 it has fallen off. It was clean, operational, and the smoothie of the day deals were unbeatable for $3. I have been a member here for 5 years now and the bathrooms constantly don't have toilet paper, there hasn't been sanitation wipes in forever, there were ZERO protein bars at the front when I went today, two of the treadmills in the movie theater are broken, and the four out of six cables are missing the clip. I don't understand how this has not been fixed having been an issue for YEARS. The gym is not bad. Staff is friendly and other members are courteous. I would like to see corporate get involved and get these issues fixed.

I initially posted an unfavorable review based on problems with the DVD player in the theater that went unfixed for weeks. It is a tribute to the power of Yelp that my "yelping" got attention from the company; they now tell me they have solved the DVD problem. Yay! Now I can focus on what I enjoy about this Retrofitness: the facility is spacious and clean, and the staff is very friendly. (But I would ask the owner of this Retrofitness to pay attention to customer complaints and address them in a timely fashion. Had the front desk addressed my DVD complaints as I raised them, I would have had no need to "go public," as I did, on Yelp.)

This location has changed ownership a few times, staff comes and goes. But as of right now, 4/19/2018, the place is clean, no broken equipment, no attitudes, supportive staff and a wide range of machines, classes and free weights. Very good deal.

I'm an older female client and don't expect I'm their prime target, but I do wish they'd turn down the loud music, get the drinking fountain fixed, repair the broken machines in a timely manner etc. The new cross-fit type classes at prime time take up too much room, essentially making the area for stretching etc unusable for a time each weekday evening. I've been a member for several years, mostly happily, but things have been changing lately. I understand the need to increase revenue, however, it must be balanced by continued attention to repairs and maintenance. I hope it's just a coincidence that the complaint box was removed!

Good deal for the price, not overcrowded and machines work. Need to be cleaner, esp. Locker rooms, fix water fountain, crack down on guys who do not put back weights--most of the free weight people. Need to turn down loud violent music and play the retro music as was advertised. Staff is friendly and nobody bothers you. Should rent towels for a buck.
