York has always given great repair service. I dropped my car off this past weekend because it needed a new starter motor. When it was finished yesterday, I paid over the phone and picked it up later that evening. The repair job was perfect, and the new starter works great. However as soon as I got in the car, I noticed the steering wheel was very dirty, the car smelled heavily of smoke, and the leather on top of my shift knob was freshly scuffed - rubbed away as if someone tried to clean it aggressively with a rag, which it never looked like this before. Nothing like this has ever happened with my past years of experience as a customer. I called the next morning to give my feedback and spoke directly with the owner, Lee. He said he didn’t do any of that, which I believe because he isn’t a smoker and my car smelled of smoke. It could easily have been someone else. I communicated that I was not looking for any compensation or any refund for this. I never blamed anyone directly for these issues. My intent was to give feedback as a concerned customer so they could be aware. Unfortunately, I might have sounded accusatory and Lee did not care to listen. Verbatim, he said, “That didn’t happen here”, “You’re a liar”, and “Do us both a favor and never come back”. I was shocked because this response was incredibly rude and unprofessional.
My family and I have been taking our vehicles here for almost a decade, if not longer. I even go out of my way to still choose this shop after moving to Virginia years ago, instead of going to a shop within walking distance. We have never been treated this way by Ed or Ted, nor have any of us complained about prior service. This shop has always done a great job, that I can vouch for. If you’re already a customer, by all means don’t stop - it really is a great shop. If you are a new customer, give it a shot - I doubt they will disappoint you.
I am just sharing my latest experience that will probably be my last.
Update (after Lee’s response):
I did not have the car towed. The starter motor worked after multiple key turns, and I was driving it like this for a couple months before I scheduled to get it fixed. Additionally, if my car was ever in the state of not starting from the starter motor, it is a manual transmission and I can push start it if necessary without need for a tow.
From my perspective, which you do not have to believe, my car interior was not in this condition prior to dropping it off at the shop. The only ones in possession were employees at the shop. It is completely fine that you have no knowledge of what occurred, I did not place the blame on you and I was not asking you to admit anything. I asked if you had any knowledge of how this could happen. Instead of saying that you have no knowledge of this happening, you immediately said “That didn’t happen here”, “you’re a liar”, - without asking employees, investigating, or even considering that it could be caused by an employee without your knowledge.
My initial phone call was to inform you of this situation so you may take proper action as a business owner. I did not ask for anything in return, nor do I have any benefit from lying. I take pride in the condition of my car’s interior just the same as you take pride in honesty. From a several-time customer (that has never had any issues at your shop) to a business owner, please take this information and humbly consider that someone at your shop could have done this by accident. What’s done is done, all is forgiven, and it’s only a 15 dollar inconvenience for me to replace my shift knob.

P.S. The credit card surcharge on my debit card was a separate discussion that was already resolved. I did not feel the need to mention this unrelated detail.

York Automotive is best car shop I've ever taken my car to. The staff is super helpful and my car is running like new, I'm definitely recommending them to all my friends and family! Thank you all!

Great service and at a reasonable price. I got way from using the dealership and started going to York Automotive. It is close to my home, and there is plenty to do in downtown Mt. Airy. Also the shop has an interesting history.

I've taken my track miata here a few times and they've always been great and knowledgeable. They've helped me setup my alignment for the track and swapped my clutch with an upgraded one. Fast and great customer service.

Went in for an inspection. They found a leaking front strut.Shop was honest - it was leaking. But my mouth dropped when i heard the estimate. 1.2k to replace both front struts.I only replaced the bad one, front left. Part was 42 bucks, and it took an hour of work. In the driveway. If you have a lift this is negligible work. 10 bolts. 600 dollars to take 10 bolts off and put them on?Save your money and go elsewhere.Two stars only because they actually caught a leaky strut, but the estimate is absurd.

Cannot speak highly enough of the professionalism and helpfulness at York. This team knew exactly what they were doing with my Mazda, and Lee even allowed me to look over everything before I made my final decision on what tires to mount (I had two different sizes that I purchased for my build). I will definitely be working with York again, and I recommend them to anyone looking for work on their MX5.
