Many great teachers on all levels. I have been practicing yoga at Unity Woods for about 7 years now. As I have aged, and life experiences have changed I have still found appropriate classes at Unity Woods. Although the switch to online was difficult at first it appears to me that most instructors have managed to integrate feedback on screen elegantly. I highly recommend this studio for all levels of yoga and urge anyone who has never worked with Iyengar to give it a try here.

Best yoga teachers in DC! Iyengar yoga teachers have trained for many years to be certified and all of the teachers I've had at Unity Woods are excellent.

I've been practicing yoga for 20+ years and Unity Woods is the best. All of the teachers are trained/certified in the Iyengar yoga tradition which means they have studied for their certificates for many years and are highly skilled, safe, thoughtful and very knowledgeable. The practice is deep, methodical and helps one find both an internal and external equilibrium and calmness. I highly recommend classes at Unity Woods!

I have been attending classes at Unity Woods for 20+ years, and I've never had a bad teacher. The classes are thoughtful and engaging, and the community is fantastic. I now mostly take classes with John (the founder) and Joe, and both are wonderful. Even in the world of Zoom yoga, they connect with students and teach Iyengar yoga like nowhere else. John can teach poses to 20+ students online and you still feel like you are being attended to personally. Joe is gentle and encouraging, but pushes you quietly to the next level. Overall, there is nothing else like Unity Woods!

I did not discover yoga until I was in my 50's, but I was extremely glad I started at Unity Woods. They opened up a whole new world to me with their approach to yoga, which incorporates not just the exercise but the philosophy. I am now in much better shape than most my peers because Unity Woods got my hooked on their classes. The excellence of their teachers made me a dedicated practitioner because they are such amazing people; I always look forward to class. The Iyengar school of yoga taught here is one of the most widely and internationally accepted, so no fads or gimmicks, and no gym-rat versions - just the real deal. My only regret is that I didn't discover Unity Woods sooner.

I took many Level I classes back in the Cordell Avenue days, and also more recently on Zoom. Most recently I've been taking the Wednesday intro class by zoom. Every class, with at least 3 different teachers, has been terrific. The teachers, all with different personalities, were all knowledgeable, pateient, and helpful. And well worth the money. You can even take a class or part of a class, learn some positioning, and take that on as a practice if you don't want to attend weekly.

Some of the reviews on here have just blown my mind (albeit only a few.) There are so many different styles of yoga to practice and Iyengar is extremely specific and traditional compared to the more popular and widely practiced styles. It hurts my heart to see that other "yogis" would ever say such hateful things. If this style is not for you, simply don't practice it. I however LOVE this practice. I love the blissful quiet and focused state of mind it brings. I love how you learn your body from head to pinky toe. I love the use of props to make all poses accessible to all persons, and sometimes even to enhance poses in new ways. I've had nothing but great experiences at this studio. As a teacher and an Iyengar yogi I had to butt in for a second with a little defense. It's not for everyone and that's okay. We don't hate on vinyasa, or ashtanga, or power yoga. That's not the spirit of yoga I'm sorry.

If you hate flow and love tedious teaching and painfully slow yoga, this is the place for you.

I've been practicing yoga for 40 years, the past 22 years at Unity Woods, and it is truly the gold standard in yoga instruction. Iyengar yoga is an alignment based yoga and nothing like gym yoga which in my experience can be harmful particularly for those with special health considerations or simple aging. This is the best yoga studio in the DC area!

Unity Woods teachers are highly trained Yoga professionals and they accommodate the pace and level of each student. Over time, students develop their own unique practice, making Yoga truly beneficial and lots of fun. The students are also very good company. We enjoy learning together.

Unity Woods is an excellent yoga studio. The teachers are skilled, experienced, and knowledgeable; they all have different personalities and teaching styles so there's a very good chance you'll find a teacher who's just right for you. Mary is my current favorite. I drive from Columbia to Bethesda to take her class once a week.

Here's what I've gotten from years of study at Unity Woods: a strong, flexible, and lean body, better focus and concentration, and greater cheerfulness and resilience. I've learned how to practice effectively on my own, so yoga is always available to me in between my excellent classes and when I travel. The community is wonderful – pleasant, warm and respectful of each practitioner. BKS Iyengar says “Yoga is one†and there are lots of great yoga teachers out there. Unity Woods is remarkable for having the highest standards for its teachers and a method that helps each student to experience all the benefits of yoga. Classes move faster and are more demanding at higher levels, but don't miss the groundwork of level 1. Even experienced yogis and athletes can benefit from that solid foundation.
