Disappointing Experience – Hidden Costs and Unnecessary Tests
I visited this place to renew my contact lens prescription, but the experience was far from satisfactory. Without my consent, they conducted unnecessary pre-exams, including a cornea imaging test. Despite my insurance covering the exam with a $10 copay, I was shocked to be billed $160 after insurance. This felt like a clear case of upselling, and I left feeling frustrated and taken advantage of. I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for transparent and straightforward care.

Not a lot of frame choices but a great staff: professional, patient and kind. Thank you Ariani!

I have been a patient of Dr Shoter's for several years. He is a very nice man and professional.
Last year I wrote a review to complain about the lady that works there who seems to be selectively nice to customers. I do not like the way she speaks to others or to me. My son in law passed away and I was unable to pick up a spare pair of contacts. When I returned from the funeral, I had to leave town again to go to a medical conference in Chicago, I went to the office and mentioned I did not pick up the extra pair of contacts because I had a family tragedy. Her response was "Well you did not buy a one year supply so you are not entitled to a pair of lenses"
I re explained the situation, and offered to pay. She said no, too bad and they were not in stock.
To whom it may concern, If you go through the threads here, this woman has caused many to leave the practice for years. When I explained to Dr Shoter that I do not like the demeanor of this manager he was apologetic that he had no control. Therefore I left with no lenses.
I have switched practices and am appalled that the reviews have not moved the needle. It is too bad because I would gone to DR Shoter forever. I am not in the market for abuse ever especially where customer kindness and service are essential..

The docs I have seen in the last 2 years are wonderful. The sales team is confusing and down right rude. They snapped at me she raised her voice, huffed and puffed. I was told by one sales team I was up to date on my eye exam, when I went in to pick up my contacts I was told, well you are overdue to an exam but in the state of MD, they give 2 years but we require 1 year. My contacts are coming in today or tomorrow, after that changing eye doctor. Very unprofessional front desk staff.

I have vision insurance. A year ago the optometrist convinced me to stray from the brand I have always used, Acuvue, and try this brand that is supposedly better called 30 I think? I gave it a go. Worst contact lenses of my life. They were constantly hurting me and the only reason I didn’t throw it out was that I’m frugal and hate waste. I come again this year to ask to just use my annual contact lens benefit for the brand I’ve been using forever before that. I was told that I have to do a new contact lens fitting because it’s a different brand, and plus they will charge my insurance and take a $40 copay. I was indignant. FYI, no eye doctors office *has* to take a copay from your pocket, it’s their choice to do that. It’s bad enough that they sold me on a bad product that they probably got a kickback from, then they wouldn’t just switch me back to what I previously had, but the thing that set me over the edge is it wasn’t enough to charge my insurance for a new contact lens fitting, $40 has to be taken out of my pocket too. I said no thank you. Just an fyi, charging for a glasses prescription is a scam done in the US as a means of avoiding purchasing 21st century technology that does it automatically. 15 years ago when I went to Taiwan I got a free prescription at no charge done by a machine in 5 seconds. I took my annual insurance benefit to a Taiwanese eye glass store and they did a new prescription for $0 (didn’t charge my insurance), gave me whichever brand I desired, gave me over a 6 months supply for $60 after insurance, gave me free things on top of it. You have options.

The only reason I am giving it a one star is because the optometrists and the lady who took my eye exams were knowledgeable and very nice. However, the manager was rude and did not even know how to read my insurance benefits. I insisted that my insurance covered up $250 in lenses. She said that my insurance changed and that benefit could not be granted and If I wanted I could claim my insurance at a later time. I was in a rush and ended up paying the full price. When I got home realized that the $250 benefit was indeed explained as part for my benefits on my EyeDr bill, so I called my eye doctor and asked for her again, pointed her to the benefit stated on my the bill. She put me on hold and then said she would fix it. She didn't even said, "I am sorry" and was kind of rude on the phone. A few minutes later she sent a reimbursement for $170 and an updated bill. Also, she had given me a discount of 15% for lenses when it was also included on my benefits that the discount was 20%. I replied saying that the reimbursement and discount were incorrect. Still waiting for an answer. I called and she didn't take my call either. I am still waiting for a full refund or I will cancel my lenses order. Terrible customer service.

Great experience in the long run and highly recommend.Hadn’t been in for an eye exam in a long time. Location is right next to my office and a big name. Had a few hiccups with scheduling although was out of the businesses control. Was fixed quickly, and from start to finish was a great experience. While this is a larger brand name, this store is run like a mom and pop, very friendly. Dr. Soder was really good and helped solved my problem. Front of the house was even better getting me checked in and out along with finding the right pair of glasses. If you’re in Bethesda, check them out

Came in for reading glasses. The optometrist was in a constant rush, would not listen to anything I said, and never stopped talking. The glasses came, I tried them on, and could not see well. When I tried to explain it to them, the staff began to pressure me to take the glasses, even though there are no returns. Then they decided to adjust the prescription to the point where the glasses would be barely different from plain glass. At that point I refused to proceed, because there wouldn't be any benefit anymore. The staff became extremely rude, and literally sneered at me when I asked for a refund. Would not give me a receipt for the refund, but said it should come in 5 days. I'm still waiting for the money, to be continued...

The Doctor who did my exam was professional and thorough, an overall pleasant gent. The rest of my experience...meh.There was a bizarre incident with a woman in the shop when I asked for a copy of my prescription. "Where are you going with it?" I answered honestly, "I'm going to walk over to Warby Parker." She curtly offered, "Well, they don't take your insurance over there." I smiled and said, "That's OK. I can do both." It was quite odd.Perhaps this is why it's taken almost 3 weeks to get one pair of glasses? I still don't have my glasses, though I stopped by the store last week and was told it would be Tuesday (I'm writing this on a Wednesday). After my exam, I asked to see the frames covered by my insurance, and that's where I chose from. That should have been good enough, but somehow I got the feeling they weren't interested in me once it became apparent that I wasn't going to be spending hundreds of dollars in their store. In that time I've received 4 pairs of glasses from Warby Parker, no muss, no fuss...and still have yet to get my frames from this store.Oh, I also had to ask the young man who rang up my visit to remove what he admitted were elective costs. Isn't that the point of a cost being elective? Tell a customer about the choice of removing an added expense, and let them choose. My vision insurance was accepted at a different eye doctor in Bethesda, but I would have had to wait an extra week for an appointment. I think next time I'll wait if it means a less intrusive, more transparent experience.

Horrible experience at this location. I was going in because I was running out of contacts and needed a new prescription. To start with the staff working in the front of the store were very nasty to each other as I overheard while waiting for my appointment. I go back and do the standard eye exams and for some reason the eye doctor tries to talk me out of wearing the same brand contacts I have worn for my entire life into some new brand I've never heard of. They also gave me a new prescription, strengthening by .25 despite wearing the same strength for years. Bit odd but I decided to respect their expertise and agree to try the trial pair for a few days. Then I go out front to check out.As I am switching to a new prescription and new brand I indicate I'm not comfortable putting in a new order at this point. I am then told, point blank "We don't just give out contact lense prescriptions without an order for lenses", looking at me as if I'm crazy for expecting this. They then proceed to run at least three separate prices for the same 1 YR supply past me, ranging from over $200 down to $85ish dollars. I again indicate I'm not looking to order lenses without trying them out and they say "ok we can just put them on hold for you", indicating that my eye exam will be much more expensive if I don't place a lense order. Exhausted at this point I agree and pay and leave.Later in the day my eyes are extremely dried out and I decide these aren't the lense for me. I call to request a prescription in the brand I usually wear. A separate employee on the phone oddly shares her aclaim for the new brand that was recommended, and again acts like it's a huge ask to request the brand I am familiar with. Finally I agree to "give it a few more days" and keep the order on hold as long as I get a prescription for my familiar brand in the case I don't like them. She comes back 1 minute later with the same .25 strength increase prescription in my familiar brand (despite saying the doctor would need to re-evaluate due to brands being different). I order the new contacts online in my preferred brand and upon wearing them, I now see blurry in certain circumstances. I will be looking for a new location in the future and will sure to avoid this location and affiliated ones in the future. Such an odd experience.

Very very disappointing customer service. I had a new patient appointment for 1pm on Sunday, confirmed online and by email and they called me at 11.15am to say it was canceled. I specifically needed a weekend appointment and I needed it this weekend. The lady I spoke to didn’t seem a bit concerned either. Will definitely choose another provider.
