I initially faced some pest issues with subletting when I first moved in, but Gabby from the leasing office has been very supportive. She’s helping me transfer to a new room, even taking the time to walk through it with me to make sure everything is in order. Gabby is incredibly open in her communication, which is making the whole process smoother, and she brings a positive vibe to the entire community. The staff here are responsive and are making the process easier for me. The neighborhood feels safe, and if you’re studying at Homewood, this place is worth considering.

I moved out last month and this was the worst apartment I've ever lived in. First off the building is infested with cockroaches in the main areas; the gym, basement, trash rooms, the elevator, as well as inside my unit no matter how clean I was.
My water would constantly be turned off without warning- the sinks, shower, and toilet wouldn’t work, making my unit inhabitable. The building manager is horrible. When I emailed her regarding not having water she told me not to contact her.
The “security” at the front would constantly be sleeping or not present. They advertised parking as “secure”, yet the garage gate would stay open for months on end.
There is also lead paint in the apartments, and the building preforms “yearly” safety checks on units that happen every month while not ever replacing my air filters or fixing any of my concerns.
EDIT: I’m not sure why the building responded saying they would like to address my concerns, when they took no effort to make my unit habitable while I was residing there.

Here is my experience staying at the Marylander.
The apartments are extremely old to begin with. When I came for a tour I was told that the apartment would be cleaned thoroughly- in Reality that was not the case.
The day I moved in, the apartment had a very weird stink, the paint was chipping, the carpet was unevenly placed. And it was FAR from being cleaned.
The stove was broken, the entire door to the storage was missing.
The worst part is the Fridge : It literally had FUNGUS and BLACK MOLD inside it and smelled like rotten meat. This was basically a health hazard, after emails and service request to change the entire fridge they did bare minimum of just coming and wiping the mold/fungus. The smell stayed there for almost 2 months. I had to keep cleaning it, putting batches of de-oderizing agents and had to keep my food in airtight containers.
The air-conditioner: as soon as I started it, it threw all the dust in the air and smelled very very bad. Thank fully they changed it after complaining.
The major problem I faced over and over again is the COCKROACHES. No matter how much you vacuum, clean etc. it kept coming. I had to put service request every 1-2 month to get exterminated. If you are a person who is clean freak like me , this would a major issue for you!
The management was not upfront about the fees and finances. I was initially charged an amount for deposit and after few months I get an email saying “there was an ERROR in their system, and I would had to pay more for deposit “. I tried discussing this with a lady from financial department of the management team- but she was determined not to help me in anyway about the surprise charge and was VERY RUDE.
I tried leaving the lease early because I regretted staying there, but management made sure to make it as expensive as possible.
Also, the hallways always smell and water gets cut off frequently.
The only good thing about this apartment complex is it is close to JHU and shuttle lines.
I know not every apartment complex is perfect but somethings needs to be addressed by management team for the current tenants.
I would NOT RECOMMEND staying here.
Note to the management team: Please don’t reply saying “sorry about this experience, please email us, etc”
I wont discuss anything further, the management did not do anything to fix it before, so there is nothing they can do now.

I recently moved out of the Marylander Apartments, and I am extremely disappointed with how my security deposit has been handled.
I was charged for three damages that I dispute, as I thoroughly inspected and cleaned the apartment before moving out. I even recorded a video showing that everything was in good condition.
Additionally, I was charged extra fees twice during my final month, which I believe were unjustified.
I’ve tried reaching out to the leasing office via email regarding these issues, but I have yet to receive a response. I initially had a positive impression of the Marylander Apartments, but now, I am left feeling very disappointed.

The only thing that keeps me attached to the Marylander Apartments is the ground-level staff. Whether it's the maintenance crew or the leasing office personnel, they are all friendly and warm. Aside from this, the apartment is in shambles. With graduation and enrollment seasons approaching, the apartment is becoming increasingly uncontrollable. There is trash everywhere, sewage flowing on the ground, and the hallways reek of foul odors. Pests are everywhere. Additionally, I have noticed that every time a tenant moves out, new carpets are installed in the rooms. However, a layer of recycled cotton is laid underneath these carpets. My wife is an expert in this field, and she has pointed out that these inferior cotton materials are a primary source of carcinogenic pollutants.

The worst apartment I've ever lived in. The wall heater has been broken since winter and has never been fixed. Every day, I see cockroaches crawling around. The garbage disposal area is very small, and there's never enough space for the trash, which also attracts a lot of cockroaches. The water often gets cut off, and the communal washing machines frequently break down. The office staff has a terrible attitude and also charge unreasonable fees. I would not recommend living here at all.

Thanks her very much for replacing the toilet for me, and also changing the winking toilet light!

I just moved in and have to say that, you HAVE TO schedule a tour before choosing your unit and signing a lease, because situations between units varies drastically.
I first moved into an older unit on a low floor level, and unfortunately it is neighboring the trash room. The infestation was terrible: kitchen has a weird smell, cabinets accumulating uncleanable roach droppings, and roaches wandering since the first day I move in, even in the closet room and on my office desk (which is very far from the kitchen). The exterminators came weekly but there's little effect. Also, lead paint was peeling.
I talked with several people I know living here and they all said they don't have such a serious infestation (though roaches do appear, but like between weeks or months). So I requested to transfer to a renovated unit on a higher level and got approved. It was a totally different environment, especially for the new kitchen appliances. No roaches seen by now, and a lot less places for them to hide. Finally it feels like home, instead of living in paranoia in the old unit.
For my experience, I think it is reasonable for the ratings of this apartment to be this controversal. This is an old building and do have issues due to the age, like roaches and ventilation system, but a lot of apartments near the east gate of JHU are also aging. With the same price, you might get better housing in the area if you live with roommates, but I want to live alone and was seeking for a studio.

Have been living in the Marylander apartments for almost a year and I love it. It’s in a walking distance the school, safe neighborhood and at a reasonable price.

There are a lot of bugs in the dorm.
Also, the door in downstairs usually unlock, which makes me really concerned the safety.

The rent is very, very high given the unit quality and age, but the convenient location near JHU and the leasing/management team would make the difference-- Lauren B. in particular was extremely responsive and helpful both during and after my application process.

Stayed for 2 years. Staff is very rude. Do not believe in 5/5 reviews because the management gives gifts for 5 stars.

Lauren at the Marylander just ruined the whole visit for me, she very blah, as if she does not want to be at work. Seem to me as if she was just worried about me applying then the actual customer service. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME.

I recently selected Marylander Apartments as my housing for when I move to Baltimore to study at Johns Hopkins, and Gabrielle's exceptional service truly stood out. Her enthusiasm, extensive knowledge, and professionalism made the entire experience incredibly enjoyable. Gabrielle took the time to thoroughly showcase the building's features and patiently answered all my questions with expertise. As someone moving from India to the US, this is a big change for me, and Gabrielle made me feel incredibly comfortable throughout the process. She provided invaluable assistance with all aspects of signing the lease and the paperwork involved with moving in. Her support and understanding has made the process smooth and stress-free -she truly exemplifies outstanding customer service!
