Don't bring your animals to butcher here unless you want to wait forever to get your meat back.We took 2 hogs here on Nov 9th and got them back Dec 23rd only after insisting and badgering them to get the meat done so we could pick it up.On top of that most of the people there are hard to deal with and really don't care if you have to wait for your meat.If I had known how much of a pain it would be to work with them I would have butchered them myself.Bland bacon and mediocre ham. If they have openings for butcher dates the reason is nobody is coming back.

On Nov 9th I took to pigs to be butchered at Curtis Custom Meats in Warren. After 3 weeks I called and was told they had started cutting them up that day, 3 weeks after drop off. After 2 more weeks I called and was told they were waiting for the meat to finish in the brine and to be smoked. After another week I called and after multiple calls and conversations I was finally able to get our meat back on the 23rd of December. I process my own deer every year for myself and consider hanging a pig for 3 weeks and having meat in brine for 3+ weeks very strange if not risky because of bacteria growth. Curtis Meats is supposedly a USDA inspected facility but these practices raise concerns to me. When I called to have my meat pulled out of the brine I was told there were 12-14 pigs in that batch of brine, so I know I'm not the only one dealing with this. I understand this is a busy time of year for butchers but obviously if it takes this long to process a hog they are taking in too many animals. We have friends that also took their pigs to them this year and had the same problem, although they got their meat back quicker. As far as quality goes no meat appears to be spoiled but the bacon is mediocre at best as is the ham. I certainly would never use this butcher again and will steer anyone I can away from using them.

So, a girl walks into a butcher shop looking for some chicken feet and leaves with a full heart. Can't find offal anywhere else near my in-laws in Damariscotta. I walked in and knew I was in the right place. There were white coats and blood. Everything resembles a slaughterhouse's onsite shop, no frills but good stuff. The prices are better than anywhere else I've been in Maine. This is the place. There is a very full and varied case of beautiful meat, everything from beef bones for broth to standing rib roast, pork chops so thick you would need to lower your broiler rack and wee Cornish hens. Against the other wall are freezers and fridges with a variety of things commonly bought like ground turkey and others not so commonly sought like chicken hearts. Aaron helped me. He was knowledgeable, very helpful, truly good at his job. When he didn't have an answer, he went in the back for one. If you chat him up, he'll know what you are looking for and can make suggestions like "we have two lamb chops left still uncut, you want them?" I do indeed sir want your fresh lamb chops. Pass the mint sauce! And the entire time I was there, messy coats brought out lovely cuts of meat putting whatever it was behind the one from an hour ago. There is no fresher unless you grab a coat and meet them out back. I'm about to teach a healthy homemade dog food class where everyone will be sent to Curtis with a list. Then once the dogs are fed, we're all going to sit down to a porterhouse or maybe a leg of lamb? Aaron will tell us what's best that day! I give Curtis's Custom Meats 5 Baaa, baaa, baaa, baaa, baaa's

Jane processed 3 lambs for us. All 3 were spoiled when we received them packaged and frozen. The meat was slimy and sticky once it was thawed. Janes response was for me to “wash it off”This is unexceptable. The USDA inspector noted the meat was held an excessive amount of time even though the cooler was at appropriate temp. the meat spoiled. All meat was taken to dump as Dr. said any amount of bacteria could kill you.
