From Marlinespike Chandlery
The Marlinespike Chandlery is an art and antique gallery/studio featuring the nautically inspired fiber work of artist Tim Whitten. The shop contains an ecclecticly curated range of interesting things.
The shop name is derived from the steel spike used by sailmakers and riggers called a "marlinespike". The term was eventually applied broadly to all forms of ropework, from basic splicing to highly detailed, intricate weaving and braiding.
A "chandlery" was historically a candle store but during the whaling era evolved into more of a general merchant to the extent that the word chandlery became synonymous with "store" in general, but typically with a maritime connotation.
