Dr. Steinberg was wonderful! Kind, helpful informative and listened thoroughly to all of our questions and concerns. Could not have asked for more or better care from the whole team for our sweet Francis. Thank you!

Maine Veterinary Medical Center is truly excellent. The facilities were clean and welcoming, the staff was compassionate and attentive and the quality of care unmatched.

I usually do not write reviews, but I need to for MVMC. If you are taking your pet here, do your homework, question everything you are told, and if it doesn’t make sense, take your pet home. Please be sure you have a backup hospital for your pet – you may need it as we did.
We took our Beagle there one day when she was sick. The ER group was nice – we discovered it was her kidneys in early failure. She was admitted for care for what we were told one to two days. Then, her care was transferred from one doctor to another doctor still at MVMC and her care went downhill quickly. This doctor was rude and demanding and wanted to keep her for another night (the third night) because it would be good for her. So we went with the doctor’s advice – that was a mistake.
I picked her up at MVMC after a third night and 6k paid in bills, and she was sicker than when we dropped her off. When we got her home, she was clearly in pain, her ears drooping, and she was shaking. I called MVMC back, and the doctor said she was fine, and this was all normal—“she needs to readjust back into her home. We don’t need to see her again, she just left here.” This is her home of five years, and she needs to readjust—huh—interesting.
We immediately took her to the other emergency clinic in Portland, where they treated her, made her comfortable, and provided fluids. We brought her home in the early morning hours as the dog we know. We continued to care for her kidneys at Portland Specialty Care which is a wonderful clinic.
MVMC looks nice and you think you are getting top care, but be very careful if you care for your pet. I cannot recommend MVMC

As a nurse practitioner of over 40 years, I would never recommend them as your first option for emergency services. They failed to provide necessary standard of care and disclose truthful information. Dr. Steinberg has no business caring for animals, let alone performing surgical procedures. If the entire staff is able to miss clear pathology indications any first year practicing veterinarian would be able to pick up on, MVMC needs to reevaluate the people working here. Do your research, there is a pattern!

I never write reviews. However my experience at MVMC still has me upset over a week later. Do not go to the MVMC ER at night if you are expecting kindness and compassion. My dog has a stage 4 heart murmur and was breathing faster than normal. He also panics at the vet and his blood pressure and heart rate skyrockets. I explained to the front desk that I did not want to park directly in the parking lot to wait for the tech because once he realizes where we are he would start to panic (elevating his heart rate and breathing further). I parked maybe 40 feet from the front door and when the tech came out she refused to help me until I moved my car. I asked if she was taking him inside because I would happily move my car if that were the case. She barely let me get my words out and again insisted I move my car (maybe saving her 20 feet to carry my 10 pound dog). I moved my car and when she approached she rudely and apathetically asked me what was wrong with my dog. At that point I asked for someone “nicer” because I did not want to make myself vulnerable to this person. Another tech came out and I was visibly upset about what had just happened, tripping over my words and starting to grow more fearful/tearful as I was watching my dog shake in panic in the front seat. This tech was not much better. When I said I was upset about the previous interaction she dismissed me by saying, oh because you wouldn’t move your car (I never once said I wouldn’t move my car). After we were both inside (and they had my dog), the tech came into the room and pushed a form at me saying my dog was on oxygen and I would need to pay between $800-$1000 for them to “stabilize” my dog and asked if I wanted them to preform CPR if my dog stopped breathing. I understand that this is protocol but I did not know the situation was this dire and in my heightened state of worry (now turning to panic) I did not know what stabilize meant. Was my dog dying? I asked through tears what this all meant and she stared at me blankly. I asked again and said I don’t understand and she said well your dog is on oxygen so yeah I would probably just sign it. That was it. She left and I waited about 45 minutes for the doctor to come in and tell me my dog was in congestive heart failure and needed to be hospitalized overnight. The doctor wasn’t a whole lot better, very cut and dry, but at least she provided me with some information.
I did leave my dog there and he made it through. The daytime doctor and tech were amazing. It was like a completely different facility in the light of day. Unfortunately, my experience the night before guarantees that I will not be using this ER again. I hear the one in Portland is much better.

We have used this clinic with good results in the past but our recent visit here was the absolute worst. Our 5 year old beloved Shi Tzu was sick and our Vet referred us there. The Vet went over the treatment/cost for various options. We agreed to go forward and left Rocky there. Within 2 hours we got a call and said our dog had a stroke and he wasn’t going to make it. We rushed to the clinic to be able to see him one more time before they put him to sleep forever. After he was euthanized they brought Rocky in the room with us, to say we were devastated is an absolute understatement . It must not have been a minute or two when some employee came in and wanted to go over the bill. It seemed so heartless the way they handle finances there. This time they seemed more concerned with getting paid than the care and us grieving over of our soul dog. The bill was over 3400.00 for him being there 2 hours. Really???? Devastated and confused over the whole experience…..

Maine Veterinary Medical Center helped save our golden’s life. While on vacation, we noticed a quick downturn in our dog and a bloated stomach. We called MVMC with symptoms and they recommended us to come in as soon as possible. They quickly diagnosed GVD and stated that this was life threatening and surgery was required immediately. Thanks to their quick action and expertise, our dog had a successful surgery. Many thanks to the surgeon Todd Hamilton! MVMC response and communication has been phenomenal, wish they were closer to our home!

Our lab passed away today while en route home from vacation. We knew it was coming, and we were happy he had one last hurrah. I reached out to Maine Veterinary Medical Center to see if we could arrange to bring him for cremation, and everyone was very helpful, kind, and empathetic. We were so pleased with Erin, who consulted with us about options, and the very warm, sympathetic response we received. Thank you.

Saddening lack of empathy. My cats regular vet is closed on sunday and their voicemail says to call MVMC. He's been a patient there for 4+ years, he's 17 and has lymphoma, I got his last 5mg prednisolone wet and couldnt give it to him. I called MVMC hoping that I could get ONE dose until Monday when I could pick up his full prescription. I offered to bring in all paperwork and prescription info.
The person that answered the phone said
"Sorry we can't just give out medicine because someone calls us, he'll need a full emergency intake and assessment"
He was denied ONE PREDNISOLONE, with proper documentation, to get my cat until Monday- unless I can produce hundreds of doors for an unneeded emergency visit.
The lack of compassion is pretty disgraceful. This is last veterinary practice I'll bring my cats to.

I highly recommend MVMC. I went in due to a lot of unknowns with my kitty and her sudden health decline. It unfortunately ended in Luna being put down. The staff here were compassionate, understanding, patient, and went above and beyond with giving us the time we needed. They answered every question without a doubt. If I ever need an emergency vet in the future, without a doubt, I’d choose MVMC!

Main Veterinary Medical Center is a wonderful place to take pets when they are in need of specialty care which was the case of our golden retriever recently, moose. Moose had scar tissue around his esophagus and larynx that they removed and he is well on his way to a great recovery. They did wonderful by Moose along with supporting us as his Paw parents. I called numerous times for updates prior to and after surgery and not once was I met with someone that was upset because I was asking questions that they probably had answered before. Thank you to the entire team we are so grateful.

On September 12 our dog got into a porcupine for the second time. The first bill shown is the vet we normally use they actually care about the animal and the human customer. As the bill reflects. The second bill from Maine veterinary medical center in Scarborough show the scum of the earth vet service who is all about money. I understand paying for a service but when the service is 7 times that of a good vet service and they do a rush job instead of a though job. They definitely need to be called out. Charging $3600.00 for two hours is blatant abuse of the people and the pet in a moment of need. Very unprofessional.
We are still removing quills as they were to worried about the money not the animal.

I lost my dog Friday afternoon here. She had a tumor on her heart and it was not something that could be medically fixed. Super sudden and difficult, you know if you have gone through it. The doctor was able to make her comfortable which gave my wife time to get there to say good bye. The staff, from the folks answering the phone, to the techs and doctors have always been top notch here. A few years back my girl was admitted with these guys and they kept her alive. They brought her back from the brink and she thrived for another couple years. I miss her dearly, but the staff here is nothing less than superb at what they do.
