My only complaint is how far I have to travel to get here, but what can ya do. Prices are great and the staff is helpful. Amazing selection of saltwater fishing gear.

After a few trips in to shop, I finally committed to a compound bow. The crew here set it up to fit me and even spent time in the indoor archery range to make sure I understood how to safely use it. The 20 yard indoor archery range is amazing.

Very good business and reasonable prices. Service was excellent and was treated well. I'm glad we have people like this in town making sure that not just anyone can purchase a weapon. Keep up the good work. I will return and purchase more weapons from you.

This is not a good review but it's a truthful one. I went into JSG last Friday to purchase a small handgun. I was asked 2 questions: Are you familiar with guns and my answer was: No. I've held one that wasn't loaded. Have you taken any gun classes? Again, no, but I plan to as soon as I have the gun (truth). The salesman refused to sell me one unless I took the classes first. He said he was "uncomfortable" selling me one. I turned and left. After researching I found there is no law stating classes first. 2 friends contacted me and told me they were not asked any questions and were sold guns. Both took their classes after, like I'd planned to. I hadn't even planned to buy any ammunition until the day before class. I did a YELP review of exactly what transpired. I called the Brunswick store today and they had no problem selling me one. When I asked them why I was discriminated against at the rockland store, the owner talked me. She said she has instructed her employees to refuse to sell to anyone they feel is not safe. I gave off no such vibe and said nothing about hurting anyone or myself. She called the store and the salesperson didn't tell the truth. He said I reiterated that I knew nothing about guns but I answered his 2 questions. I'm sure they have cameras and this was recorded so I hope some agency looking into this checks that out before it magically disappears. She supported his decision and told me I could go ahead and file complaints and sue because she's been through it before and nothing happened. I was not told why he felt I was "unsafe" and he was "uncomfortable". It's basically the " because I said so" excuse. I have filed discrimination complaints and will continue to with the agencies who protect people, even if nothing is resolved. I AM in a minority but I honestly don't know if that'd anything to do with it. I don't want the store to be closed, I certainly don't want anyone out of work, I don't want them cited or fined and I don't want money. I don't even want to do business with them. I want the discrimination to be recognized and stopped. Thank you for taking the time read this.

On Dec. 9 in the late afternoon I went to ********* Sporting Goods in *********** to look at and purchase a firearm. I explained that I was looking for something small, just for personal protection. The man listened politely. Then he asked me if I had any experience with firearms, which I don't. I held a gun but it was not loaded. He asked if I had taken any classes, which I hadn't yet but had planned to with the gun I purchased. He refused to sell me a gun. He told me he was \

Because of the climate of hate, rage, drugs, antisemitism, mass shootings in this country, as well as many other personal reasons, I decided that I wanted personal protection. I went into Johnson's Sporting Goods in Rockland ME yesterday, dressed well, speaking clearly and stating what I wanted, asking if they had any small guns just for protection. I wasn't just browsing. I was there to buy if they had one that would be a good fit for my needs. They didn't answer my question. The man at the counter when you first walk in, asked me if I'd ever handled a gun before. I have not, just held one that was not loaded. He asked if I ever took a class before-- How could I have taken a class but not used a gun? I was still polite but I've also been around enough to know something was wrong and this form of questioning was not going to end well. He then told me he would not sell me a gun. He was not "comfortable" doing that. He told me I had to take the classes first, which I didn't know was some kind of law or rule and not one person has ever told me this was a requirement. You can't tell me that every single person who bought a small gun there took classes first. I don't believe that. I asked if he could at least start the background check and he also refused. Because I am in a minority and have dealt with discrimination for a great many years, in many forms, I know it when I hear it. I said nothing in response , just turned and walked out. When I got home I called Liberty Tree Arms and asked if there was a rule or even a law about not selling a gun to someone who hasn't taken the classes yet and he said there is no such law and to come in and he'd help me any time. So you're thinking- too bad for me. They have the right to refuse a sale. But think about this- I AM an old woman. How would you feel if your grandmother went to this business and asked for help because she felt she needed to have a form of protection and they refused? What if they treated someone you love this way? You might be a little angry if this happened to someone in your family. My recommendation is not to waste your time dealing with Johnson's Sporting Goods, especially if you are an elderly woman or in any minority. These are clues I have that this may have been motivated by discrimination. It was not stated to my face. I was taught to do business locally whenever possible. As a retired teacher, local businesses and residents paid my salary, I was taught the right thing to do was to put food back on their table. I tried to do just that here. I will never return to that business and cannot recommend them because of my experience. If it was possible to give them negative stars, I would have. ***This is an edit to what I wrote yesterday. After reading my review I was contacted by a young lady I know who told me a family member of hers bought a gun there last month. She had not taken the classes. She's much younger than I am and to be honest, a very pretty lady. She went in shopping with a man. We had the same needs.- we wanted a small gun for protection. We are both female. Neither of us took the classes before the sale. So, what do YOU think?

Awesome store. The employees and owner really know a lot about hunting and fishing gear. I stop by frequently just to see what's new and talk to the employees.
