The Bucksport Area Child Care Center offers a vital service to parents in the area. As a parent who lived in Bucksport, I don't know what our family would have done had it not been for this service. My child went to this center for a few years and I daily saw how much time and energy was needed by the staff to offer the service. What causes my great concern was an evaluation I received concerning my child. My child has never received any reports of being violent or disrespectful from any of his caretakers, play groups or church groups. Suddenly, with the arrival of a new director, our family received almost daily reports that our child was engaged in hitting other children. Of course this was very concerning. We did everything we could as parents to proactively address the issue. We received reports of hitting with no description of what took place before the hitting- we weren't given any real details as to what was going on. We were brought into parent teacher conferences where it was suggested that we send our child to CDS services without an appropriate diagnosis of any issue from what I understand. The director said they would follow our child with a clipboard and record our child's actions in order to evaluate the situation- our child was four years old. No diagnosis was ever provided- we were informed that CDS centers have staff with 'masters degrees' and somehow this would address our child's problem. I understand that as a parent, I am always going to take my child's side of a situation, so I tried to remain as openminded as possible for the benefit of my child. I observed a lack of separation between the two year old children and the older children. There is a tremendous difference between a two year old child and a four year old child- the two year old children were touching and getting into the space of the older children. My child was having a difficult time with the invasion of space from the younger children and was expressing that by enforcing his space- albeit through inappropriate physical contact. Due to a change in employment, our family relocated. My child is now in a different school for the past six months. We have never received a single report of hitting or physical contact. I have proactively asked teachers to look for this and report the issue. The reason I am posting this is that incorrectly diagnosing a child with a mental health issue at the age of four can have devastating consequences for their development. I do not believe that this was handled professionally or with care by the staff of the center and potentially placed my child in a damaging situation. If the issue was with my child, there would have been reports before and after a relationship with the director. The opposite is the case and this can be demonstrated- leading us to believe that our child was not placed in hands that were able to competently assess the situation and provide our child with appropriate care. This center provides a vital service for working families in Bucksport- but I want to caution other parents to take ownership of parenting their children, make your own assessment while keeping an open mind and have other options and resources available should you encounter similar unfortunate situations.

They have an employee here that currently has lice, has poor hygiene and not fit to be around kids. I would not take your children here if I were you.

Revolving door of poorly trained staff, neglecting emotional needs of neurodivergent children, unsafe practices and this is just while in the presence of a parent. Can’t imagine staff/child interactions when there isn’t a parent there observing. If this is the best Bucksport has to offer that’s sad.
