I’ve been with Bar Harbor Bank and Trust for over 15 years. My parents and grandparents before me were lifelong customers. I had always thought very highly of this banking institution until recently. Something has changed and it’s definitely not for the better. One of the things I loved most about BHBT was their personalized service and their hometown Maine values. Whenever I had a problem or issue I could call them and 9 times out of 10 my issue would be readily solved. This is not the case any longer. I had an issue with an erroneous charge being made to my account and this charge caused an overdraft fee. I was able to contact the company who made the charge, show them that it was a mistake and have the charge immediately reversed. I assumed no harm/no foul but this was not the case at all. Once the charge was reversed they not only insisted on my paying their $34.00 overdraft fee but they decided to add on an additional one in the interim between when the inaccurate charge was made and when it was reversed and they did this over an 18 cent deposit and withdrawal that was done by PayPal simply to confirm my account. That’s $68.00 that they are charging me for an error not of my making. $68.00 might not seem like a lot of money but when you subsist on a disability pension that’s far below the poverty line it can make the difference between eating that week or not. Now I’m not a big complainer but the bank I used to know would have handled this situation completely differently than it was handled today. Today I was treated with an “I don’t care attitude” and a level of unreasonableness that I haven’t dealt with ever, with any company or even any large conglomerant and this is MAINE. A state that’s always been different than most and one that’s always looked out for its citizens. Where people genuinely care about one another and a place I’ve always felt immensely blessed to be from. This recent experience with Bar Harbor Bank and Trust has left me feeling both hurt and confused and concerned that my once caring, fair minded, gracious hometown bank is no longer any of those things. I’m left wondering if it’s just their values that are changing or if I need to be prepared for the end of Maine as I know it.
Truly heartbreaking indeed.

We have followed Bar Harbor from the old Merrill to PUB to Bar Harbor. Always helpful, like when I started a small company. The online banking is wonderful.
