The majority of the time the people and staff at this VA hospital are sympathetic and top-notch, unfortunately, like all other VA hospitals, They have a bad habit of reacting the symptoms instead of being proactive with symptoms. Maybe that has to do, patient by patient, but when it comes to direct care, I have found great service here.

I am a Marine Corp veteran and I receive all of my health care from this facility.. I love and appreciate the treatment, compassion, and care I’ve received from the staff.

Called to get an appointment this morning but call center didn’t have any available for women’s health. She transferred me to the clinic where this rude clerk told me nothing was available until September. I asked her if the VA offers acute appointments or not. She told me that since I was scheduled an appointment earlier this year (a follow up) and cancelled it that I wasn’t eligible to be seen in clinic for anything. I told her I always get letters for appointments I never made and then I cancel them so they can go to someone else because the clerk will schedule appointments even if we don’t answer our phones. Also, if I can’t make it because I don’t have childcare then I do the responsible thing and cancel so someone else can be seen. So, if you’re in pain or are sick, you are penalized and locked out of the VA if you cancelled your last routine appointment. This is not a policy to which I’m familiar in the healthcare system so I’ll call IG to confirm or inform them about these practices. I asked her about that policy and she said she wasn’t going to go “back and forth” with me and I could schedule for September which, by the way, far exceeds the access to care parameters. The VA claims to want veterans to “choose” them for our healthcare needs but just like other veterans attest to, they do everything in their power to ensure that you seek care elsewhere. Then I asked to be transferred to patient advocacy and the lady told me they didn’t answer and I could leave a message. I asked for their hours to which she replied, “they’re there but they aren’t answering so you would have to call back if you don’t want to leave a message.” They also didn’t offer any type of community care option like the call center clerk said they had to if they couldn’t see me.

Ive been going to this location for over 12 years and other than my primary care dr being switched every 6months - year ive never had an issue with this location. Slidell, hammond and a few others blow donkey d!€k but this one is pretty good considering how the VA system is.

I've been twice this year and always had a great experience. Most of the negative reviews and comments are from angry people looking for something to be angry about.

Had a prescription written for my medication Friday, unfortunately couldn't make it in to pick it up until Sunday. When I arrived I simply asked to have the prescription that I had filled since I was unable to make it during "business hours" and was going out of town first thing Monday morning. Dr Timothy Dwyer without even speaking with me simply said he wouldn't fill my prescription. Unacceptable!!! Since when does medication and needing medical help only apply to the week day. It's not like i have a habit of picking up my prescription on weekends. A one time exception couldn't have been made to pick up medication that I needed before my trip. Now I either have to change my flight or just go my whole trip without my medicine because it was a Sunday and Dr Timothy Dwyer says I can't get my medication. Beyond grateful that my medication isn't life threatening but to those that do have an emergency and need medication make sure it doesn't happen on a Sunday.

Incompetent. Have an extremely painful cracked tooth. Went to the ER and they told me they can't work on me but gave me a list of organizations that can. I called UM and they said all I need is a referral from the VA. Called the VA for a referral.. didn't hear anything for 3 weeks. Called them again.. and got TOTALLY different information saying they CANT give me a referral because I'm not 100% dissabled...which.. if I was a 100% I wouldn't need a referral in the first place. In the middle of this I kept getting transferred to phones that rang for 20 minutes at a time with no answer. No hold music just ringing..Called a 5th time and got transferred to an office in Arkansas who had no idea what I was talking about. Amazing...Still unresolved. This is the beautiful society we fought for...So out of the 6 or 7 different ppl ive talked to, they ALL have different answers contradicting the last person. So I guess they're guidelines are just specific to who picks up the phone. And you're lucky if that even happens.Just... wow.

The Director has an open door policy. I tried voicing my recommendations to him to make my Service better and all he did was refer me back to my Supervisor. An employee can't even discuss Hospital Operations with the Director?? Why bother.

I was waiting in the pharmacy and Everyone disappeared at 1600. Without a word. No one knows whats going on. Did they close? Shift change? It would have been nice for them to tell us, well, ANYTHING.

The staff needs customer service training because their nasty attitudes isn't it! They are not helpful just nasty! These service men, women and their families don't deserve this type of negative nasty energy from people who their to supposedly be helping people. This is disgusting at a VA facility!!!

Service is down. Still waiting on travel pay from July 5th. The lady in travel tells me that they are still processing in June payments. We about to be in September. The New Orleans VA is not servicing veterans in the matter that we deserve. This is absolutely ridiculous.

I was rushed to the New Orleans VA emergency room yesterday. I have to say the doctor himself was a little full of his self worth and had somewhat of a god complex not wanting to hear my history, problems and such. But the ER nurse who’s name I am pretty sure is Chris C. was phenomenal and deserve more praise than I could even imagine giving. He could instantly pick up on the fact that I was having an anxiety attack on top of my other problems and took the time to calm me down and let me know everything would be ok. I honestly can not begin to give this guy the kudos he so deserves.
