Even with the ever-increasing number of sushi restaurants in the city, Sake Café remains a destination for lovers of Japanese cuisine. Choose from a long list of unsubtle Americanized sushi rolls, filled with fried batter, smothered with several sauces, and covered in a rainbow of fishes and caviars. Flashy perhaps, but skip them and go for the sushi and the sashimi: still-pulsating scallops taken fresh from their shells; marbled toro; and aji (small, silvery mackerel) served tempura-fried with their heads and skeletons intact. Cocktails, wine and saké shape the beverages component, but the efficient servers never let cups of green tea go empty. The well-thought-out wine list is surprisingly extensive for a sushi restaurant. We could make a dessert of some of the plum wine selections, but you will probably want to opt for tempura cheesecake with strawberries. Contractors worked architectural miracles to transform a drab drugstore into this ambient Japanese restaurant with dim corners and concentrated lighting, a lounge-like cocktail bar, and a comfortable upstairs loft. One thing they smartly left alone: the ample parking lot. Also located at 1130 S. Clearview Parkway, Elmwood, 504-733-8879; and 4206 Veterans Blvd., Metairie, 504-779-7253.
