When I was disabled in 2013, my entire focus became my health, my hair was my last concern. Since moving to Covington in 2016, I have gone to inexpensive hair salons every 1-2 years. Since COVID I have been cutting my own hair. My hair was thick, weighed down, damaged, and difficult to comb. I was finally fed up and decided to get my haircut.I called Family Cuts V in Mandeville. The stylists I spoke with was cheerful and informative and she offered me a 10% senior citizen discount. I read the reviews online, and some of them were not complimentary. This concerned me until I read an honest review by Tara, a hairstylist at Family Cuts V. She said the former stylists are no longer working at the salon and new stylists have been hired.I went to Family Cuts V to speak to a stylist about my hair. I was greeted by Cherie Pierre, who is a stylist and the manager. We sat down and discussed my hair concerns. I felt comfortable speaking with Cherie, she was very engaging. I am chemically sensitive and can no longer color, perm, or use any styling products. In addition, during menopause my hair transitioned from straight to curly hair. I wanted a wash and go, no fuss hairstyle. Cherie was not shaken by all my hair constraints and explained how she can create a style that will complement my facial structure and will be easy to maintain. That evening Cherie went home and told her husband how excited she was about cutting my hair. She mentally envisioned exactly how she was going to style it. She also had a dream about cutting my hair that night. I was shocked by her exuberance! I asked her why she was so excited about cutting my hair. She said my hair is “virgin hair”, its healthy because it has not been colored, highlighted, or processed since 2013. It is long, thick, and curly hair with no layers. She said it’s like cutting hair at a hair show, my hair will make a wonderful “before and after” transition. The next day at my appointment, Cherie reached for two black leather tool kits which contained various scissors and styling instruments. I told her she looked like a hair surgeon. It took Cherie over an hour to cut and layer my hair. She took her time with my hair. Each time she chose a cutting instrument, she explained how it helped develop my ‘easy to style’ haircut. As she cut, it became clearly obvious to me Cherie is an experienced, knowledgeable stylist. Before being disabled I always sought out skilled stylist at high end salons on the Southshore. Cherie is as capable, talented, and devoted to her craft as any of my former stylists. As we spoke, I discovered Cherie graduated from John Jay’s Beauty School on Robert E. Lee Blvd in New Orleans. After graduation she worked alongside John Jay for over 30 years at his salon downstairs from his beauty school. Due to health challenges, Cherie desired a less demanding schedule, so she moved to the Northshore and started working at Family Cuts VIII until she was asked by the owner to style hair and manage Family Cuts V in Mandeville.Cherie did not want me to look in the mirror while she was styling my hair. She only wanted me to see the final product. She blew dry my hair so I could see how it would look if I wanted to wear it with body but no curls. I will never forget the first thought that came to me when I looked in the mirror………….’your back, oh my goodness, it’s me, where have you been’? It’s as if I came back after being absent for a long period. At that moment I realized how much of me I lost when I become disabled. I’ve been wearing my hair in a ponytail for probably a decade. It was so nice to find myself again. Thank you for helping me find my way back, Cherie. After 11 years without a regular hairstylist, I finally found a hairdresser I trust and enjoy, and a salon where I feel at home.Services: Shampoo & conditioning

Cherie is amazing! She has the passion of a real artist. It's immediately obvious that she is not just doing a job; not just cutting your hair but creating a work of art! She gave me one of the best hair cuts of my life and explained each step as she did it so it was a most unique and even educational experience. I was decidedly impressed. She's truly a rare find!

I cut, color, and style hair. It's my pleasure making my clients happy with their hair. I was previously at Fantastic Sam's, and they closed. Now I've found my home with Family Cuts and I love working with my co-workers. We are a new staff that has all the good reviews. The previous staff is the ones with all the negative reviews. We are trying to change that. We would love for you to give us a chance to see what we can do. Thank you, have a great day, GOD BLESS ?

Tara, did a stupendous job!! I went in a long haired wreck(like Neil Diamond from the 70’s- work has been rough for awhile). I just asked her to use her judgement and then turned her loose. She is a very gifted professional. She uses a careful technique which is basically sculpting. She knows exactly what she is doing. I came away with a smart business cut(one of the very best I’ve had). Go get your hair cut by her. You will be glad that you found her. Cheers.Service: Haircut
