Meijer is always a reliable place. They always have what you need or want. Prices aren't horrible. Very good store. Definitely recommend

I was a huge fan of Meijer until today. Loss prevention searched through our cart as we were checking out, as my husband was bagging our stuff. It would have been absolutely fine, but this individual broke the reactionary gap with my husband, who was very obviously uncomfortable.
My husband asked them very directly what they were doing. They said nothing. No communication at all. In an attempt to de-escalate, I cautiously said the individual was just doing their job. It should have been the employee saying that. They had no uniform, and I did not see their name tag. They could have very well been an unemployed stranger for all customers know. That is a safety concern, and should be addressed by Meijer.
In addition, I know we were profiled based on our clothing. When I go in dressed up, I don’t have to worry about something of this nature happening. I suppose we potentially looked far too poor to be there…? My husband works in construction and his clothing was a bit dirty and worn. I am a local college instructor, and was by no means dressed fancy.
Furthermore, and most important of all, my toddler was sitting in the cart— this employee was far too close to my child, especially without announcing their intentions, than will ever be acceptable to me. My husband did not realize they were even an employee until I told him. I would not have known if I had never worked for a large corporation of this type. I am very familiar with how they operate.
Employees need better training, and should be transparent with customers concerning what they are doing. At the risk of leaving a scathing review, we will not be returning. You should be ashamed for treating your customers like this. I know we’re not the only ones. A preliminary Google search of this particular Meijer’s 1 star reviews makes that quite obvious. There are so many wonderful employees there. It isn’t the entire store, but antagonizing your hard working customers isn’t exactly a good look. Do better.
Edited for additional details and clarity.

Go to Kroger. Or even Wal-Mart. Maybe Save a Lot. Don't give Meijer your money.

Produce is terrible here. Salad kits are bad. Have to go to Kroger just to get FRESH produce. Why do you guys keep it on the shelves knowing it has went bad? What makes matters worse is, you guys will mark the price down, Knowing that it has went bad. Plant based selection could also be better here. Would love to see more choices like daring chicken products, Impossible hot dogs, The list goes on.

I was trying to do the grocery shopping for my family and I was being followed around the store like I was stealing.I guess I looked poor I had 3200 dollars in my billfold and plenty of credit cards. They made me so uncomfortable by following me that I just left with half my order. When I got to check out they was waiting on me on the phone and staring me down.I was so mad and upset. They was sure that I was stealing.I wanted to talk to them about it but who could I complain to.I hate this store for making me feel like a criminal

Although the prices can be a bit high sometimes, I always find what I'm looking for.

I can’t recommend this store while the construction is going on. It was over 90 decibels at times when I was there today. Way too loud during business hours.

Wow has this place gone downhill. I know staffing issues are abundant but at minimum you can stock food. 2 cashiers working, lines back to mid store. Alot of staff just hanging out and doing nothing whole 2 cashiers are getting buried. Here's a simple solution management - "Cross-training" and monitor your staff occasionally! Worse than Wal-Mart now.
