Great place! Honest quotes and pricing for repairs. They won't work on newer equipment because it's impossible to get parts but if it's vintage this is the place to go. They stay busy so you have to be patient but it's absolutely worth the wait for repairs.

I have a late 90s Sony stereo (radio, CD player, and tape deck). The CD player hasn't worked in years and one of the speakers started clicking recently. They were able to fix the speaker right away and explained that unfortunately they couldn't fix the CD player because Sony stopped making the lasers in 2016. The associate was surprised that it still worked really well otherwise as that model was made to only have a useful life of about 10 years. Very professional and kind staff - it was a pleasure!

Pathetic repair service. Be careful what you bring in. Would rate -100 but Google won't go any lower than 1.

Joseph is extremely knowledgable. He has been helpful to me and honest on whatever I bring for him to look at. I appreciate that very much. He's repaired my turntable and I've also bought a boombox from him. I enjoy stopping by and browsing/ buying the quality vinyl he sells too. If you can stop by and check it out.

If you need your record player repaired, this is the ONLY place to go in Louisville. My son damaged my husband's manual Victrola trying to play a record and they had it fixed and recalibrated within an hour. Plus, they have a selection of weird vinyl very reasonably priced.

MTR is one of the few places in Louisville that can repair an old VCR. My SONY dated back to 1989 and they were able to get it functioning in time to show my children and their spouses a ton of memories this Xmas. We were also able to show the family our wedding from 1988. Granted, I had to take the VCR back 2X but they didn't charge me for the second visit. I've learned my lesson to get these tapes transferred to a digital format. It did take about 40 minutes via Interstates from Middletown to Preston Highway in south Louisville. Traffic and construction were abyssmal as has been the norm for many years in 'The V'lle'.

Awesome connection to have and personalized service for me for years. I have collected vintage equipment since the "golden age" of the 70's stereo equipment, and Magnetic has serviced and recapped everything, I have thrown at them. They have a long history of taking care of their customers and a lot of knowledge. They have serviced my vintage, Kenwood, Pioneer, Yamaha, in addition to my contemporary Denon, Luxman audiophile equipment. From amps, receivers, turntables, tape players, DVD/CD players, they have always serviced them back to Mint condition. They also have a good inventory of vintage equipment, LP's and speakers in house for sell. The guys are all straight forward and above board on their service and equipment. I drive two hours one way to utilize their expertise and have never been disappointed, Bruce

I have a vintage Yamaha Amp and Preamp (M-50 & C-50) that I've loved for many years. One day why listening to some Paul Desmond in the background while I worked, I heard a POP and turned around to see smoke billowing from the power amp. I unplugged quickly and carried it outside and immediately starting looking for someone who could repair it in the Louisville, KY area. I stumbled upon the site of Magnetic Tape Recorder Company and gave them a call. My call was answered by Joseph who asked me many questions about my situation and spent at least 30 minutes with me and speculated that my issue may not have originated from the power amp but rather from a spike from the pre amp. The next day, I brought them both into the shop and Joseph spent over an hour checking out both of my Yamaha components as well as my cheap ADC EQ and was able to give me a fairly good reading that the issue was caused by a smoked capacitor and that the best course of action, were I to want to save these components, to be to replace all of the evil purple capacitors which were suspect and some shown to be leaking and the probable the real source of this issue. I put $75 down for each Yamaha component for diagnostics which, if they were repairable, would go toward the total cost which they gave me an estimate for each individually. They told me that, due to their backlog and rigorous testing regimen, it could be up to 90 days until we have results. In a little over 30 days, I received a call that both the Power Amp and Pre Amp had been successfully repaired and then they gave me the cost. It was UNDER what they had estimated for the Power Amp and about what they had estimated for the Pre Amp so in total, it was less than what I thought I was going to spend. I drove to the shop later that day and Josep set all of the components up (included the EQ) which he really had no obligation to do and demonstrated the working condition of the system. He even showed me the best wiring configuration with the Amp, Pre-Amp and EQ to provide the best performance and best electronic protection of the components. Additionally, as a souvenir, Joseph gave me a ziplock bag containing all of the 'smoked' components and the 30+ capacitors that they had removed and replace. I drove home and spent the next 2 hours getting everything set back up and then turned it on.... It was FANTASTIC! I have now given them my Thorens TD-160 to adjust and can't wait to see the results of that! I will not take my audio equipment repair needs to anyone else and though I am sure that all of the technicians at MTR are top notch, I will always ask for Joseph as a starting point!

Highly recommend this local gem! Joseph and Woody always take great care of each piece i bring to them. I've probably taken 8-10 pieces in for various repairs and each have been completed with excellent workmanship and reasonable pricing. I highly recommend these folks for repair of any piece of vintage gear you have. They also have a nice sales floor with several vintage units and LPs for sale. Check em out!

We have an early 1970s Pioneer amp that was having some age-related issues that were difficult (impossible) for us to diagnose. We found Magnetic Tape Recorder Inc through a Google search and drove 130 miles for a visit. They are so very knowledgeable about vintage equipment and we felt very comfortable with their best guesstimates on the issues and costs involved. We just picked up our amp a few days ago and are so very pleased with the recapping job along with the new lighting and best of all, no cracking and popping sounds. It’s as good as brand new. Their pricing is reasonable . We will keep them in mind for any other vintage needs.
