Wanted to drop off an alternator to be rebuilt earlier today and also wanted to ask if possible to put a less than one year old battery on a trickle charger while my alternator was being rebuilt.
Bottom line is that the gentleman with “55 years of experience” load tested a discharged group 51 battery using a battery load tester similar to a FJC 45118 (1000A Max load) and cranked the adjustment all the way up to the capacity of the tool (any discharged battery is going to falsely fail that test) AFTER I mentioned to him that I drove for 30 minutes on the reserve capacity of the battery after my alternator went out - this means the battery is dead and needs to be RECHARGED BEFORE TESTING.
Anyone load testing a battery, full well knowing it has been drained before hand knows exactly what they are doing and trying to not provide a service and simply trying to sell you a battery.
The old man boasted his “55 years of experience” but he needs to realize that some of his customers walking in might also be Automotive Technicians that have worked in the industry for in my case over 10 years.
For the sake of the public, I added a photo of the correct procedure to test a battery. If a shop doesn’t follow these simple steps they are trying to rip you off.

Old school family shop. They know their business from older makes and models to modern. If they don’t have it or can’t fix it, you probably don’t need it. Also, being female, they treated me the same as any other customer. I appreciate it because, sorry to say, some of these repair or parts places don’t. I know my cars.

Awesome, friendly people. Had my car towed here and they rolled it up into the shop for me. Put in a brand new alternator and charged up my battery. Highly recommended!

Quality work and years of knowledge. I had a starter for 1947 Dodge truck. They rebuild the starter and when I picked it up the owner showed me pictures of the work in progress. I don't know they would do that for every rebuild but because this was an unusual rebuild they wanted to make sure I was confident in the work they did. I installed the starter and it works great. I highly recommend them.
