I recently brought my mom's cat in here. The doctor was friendly and took the time to answer all of my questions. I was treated with compassion and not a way to make money. The cost was reasonable and staff was friendly across the board. When my appointment was over Sara at the front desk read through my invoice with me and helped to sort out an issue with my invoice. She answered all my questions and even helped me to my car with the food we bought. Compared to other places I've been I wasn't rushed and everyone took their time to show me they really cared about my moms cat.i don't currently have pets of my own but I wouldn't hesitate to bring them here if I did. I'm glad my mom chose your office and I'm really thankful for the time every staff member took with me!

Not a friendly place. I was late and the office manager made her point however I reminded her that I had waited 40 minutes for the last appt and walked out. No thanks, I’ll find another vet.

A week or two ago, my cat got a wound on his back, and throughout that time, I had to go to multiple vets, but none of them compared to the people at Family Pet Hospital. They have treated my cat with the best care and also fit me in on short notice. Family Pet Hospital of Shawnee will be the only place I take my cat from now on.

Unfortunately, Dr. Annette Frerking isn't there anymore. It went from A+++++ to just okay.

We've taken our dogs to them for years now. They saved our dog's life when she got septic. Good people, they know what they're doing, and try to work things out when money's tight.

I hand delivered the letter below on 11/8/23 and received no response, so I emailed it on 11/19/23. I have received no response as of 12/6/23 from Dr. McDermott or Dr. Scott.I am writing to let you know my significant concerns. My beloved 14-year-old Sarge underwent dental surgery with Dr. McDermott on 10/4/23. At the time, I expressed my concern for the procedure due to his advanced years and end stages of bladder cancer. She assured me that she had performed similar procedures on dogs of advanced age. Sarge came through the procedure without complications. The next day, he would not eat and experienced vomiting and diarrhea. I called and the vet techs responded. Dr. Rueb was the vet on duty because Dr. McDermott was not available. He prescribed FortiFlora SA packets and Diawin tablets on 10/6/23. It was difficult to get Sarge to take because of his lack of eating, but we finished the regime, and his stomach condition did resolve, but he was much weakened and started collapsing upon getting up on 10/11/23. On 10/12/23, Sarge had an appointment with Dr. Rueb for lab work and to address the collapse issue. Dr. Rueb called me later that day with the lab results. They showed a significant decline, and he recommended euthanasia, so 8 days after the dental surgery Dr. McDermott assured me that Sarge’s lab work showed he was stable enough to endure. Dr. McDermott did not consult with me during any of the numerous phone calls that I made with the above concerns. Dr. Van Zandt would have.Sarge died at home Monday night. I am riddled with the guilt of putting him through the undue stress of a surgery that weakened him unnecessarily for his final days.*I am giving 3 stars because the dental surgery was successful. My concern is should Sarge have been put through the stress of the procedure and also no response to my letter/email.

So I am not a client of theirs anymore. I left Shawnee last summer. I enjoyed them the few times I brought my cats to them while I lived in Shawnee. Unfortunately, one of my cats passed away last October due to a blockage. I wanted to confront/question the vets who worked on him (where I live), so I spoke with the vets here to get some insight before doing so. They were extremely understanding and answered every question I had to the best of their ability (without seeing the situation themselves). I received a sympathy card in the mail a week or two later. I did not expect this as I'm no longer a client of theirs. It was a very sweet thing to do and as I am still grieving the loss of my cat, the letter with handwritten sympathies from various staff there made me feel happier and like they genuinely cared. I wish I could still see them as my primary vet for my other cat, but I just don't live in the Johnson County area anymore. I've attached a picture of my boy that passed that you guys had seen a few times. What you guys did really meant a lot to me and makes you guys stand out significantly from every other vet I've been to. Thank you again

My dogs and I have gone to Family Pet since we moved back to the KC area a year ago, and I was previously pleased with their service. They saw my dogs for their annual exams and my girl when she wasn’t acting like herself. I was planning on taking advantage of their annual dental special to get both dogs’ teeth cleaned next spring. Sadly, they merged with Sunflower Animal Hospital, and things aren’t the same.First off, I called the vet Saturday morning after realizing late Friday night that my dog was in pain and not able to jump onto the bed and did not seem like her normal self. I was told that they were fully booked (understandable on a weekend; local vets are all very busy) and their next appointment was on Wednesday with no attempt to schedule an appointment on Wednesday. The lady I spoke with recommended that I take her to the emergency vet, since it sounded like an emergency. I didn’t and she was better by Wednesday, but this just goes to show that the practice seems to be quite busy and there is no need to extort clients to generate business (keep reading; this is relevant.)Two days later, I received a notice that the order I’d placed for Heartworm/flea/tick/parasite meds on the online pharmacy the week prior had been declined. I called to find out why and was told that they wouldn’t give me 6 months’ worth of meds just 3 months before the dogs were scheduled for their annual exams. This is not a law, it is just their policy. Not only did I find this offensive, as it implies I would skip my dogs’ annual vaccines if they had their heartworm preventative, it also doesn’t make me feel like they care about my pets AT ALL.Since I’d just confirmed that the practice was extremely busy, I was sure I’d misunderstood that they’d have a policy like this in place. I called back and asked if the doctor could make an exception since I did have 2 dogs (in the same weight range) that could each take one of the tablets each month, so they’d be gone in 3 months anyway. I was told that was not an option because it’s illegal for me to split the prescription between my two dogs. I asked to speak to someone else to confirm, and the next person I spoke to confirmed, in a honeyed voice, that they WOULD grant a prescription request for 6 individual doses of the dogs’ medicine, but not for a 6 pack of the exact same medicine. The difference in price is $134 through their online pharmacy.Since this interaction, I’m pleased to say that I’ve found a new practice that has confirmed that they grant their clients prescription requests even when it means that meds will extend beyond the date of the annual scheduled exam, presumably trusting that pet owners who are responsible enough to keep their dogs on a heartworm preventative will also keep their rabies vaccines up to date.Unfortunately, the new practice can’t give me prescriptions until they’ve seen my dogs, and they can’t administer their annual vaccines until a month prior to the regularly scheduled date. All of the heartworm medicine options for my dogs are only available in 6-month packs or at double-price, so my dogs will be untreated until January unless I pay the $134 extra (which I won’t do, on principle) or pay for an extra exam for both dogs at the new vet and then take them back for vaccines in January. If you’re considering this vet, I suggest you factor in how important convenience, respect, and care for your pets are to you before selecting Family Pet/Sunflower Animal Hospital.I gave two stars because the team at FPHS was great to my dogs prior to the merger, and I can't imagine them denying my dogs a prescription for basic preventatives under these circumstances.

Mean people!!! we are traveling and my dog hurt his nail yesterday and so I really needed someone to trim them and examined the split nail. They only see established pets. How can you be a hospital and not see other pets? Do not recommend this place. Heartless.

I want to start this review off by saying I have had wonderful care from Dr. Scott and others for routine exams. I am very upset because I have a sick dog who is whining with a possible ear infection and I was told he cannot be seen for 8 days! I was not given an option of a sick call appointment or problem spot. I was told last time not try and self treat these type things, but what is one supposed to do when your dog is in pain and not given the option to be seen in a day or two.

If you are looking for a vet who is as invested in your pet's health as you are, visit Dr. Scott at Family Pet Hospital. We've worked with Dr. Scott for many years (through the lives of three animals) and been very satisfied with her as a vet. From a pet health perspective, she's extremely thorough. When facing tough choices, she is an educator, explaining issues, offering avenues forward, providing possible up front costs and helping owners understand possible outcomes/knowledge that can be gained from various tests. She never pushes owners in a direction, but provides options.Dr. Scott has an excellent bedside manner with both pets and their owners. She is the most compassionate vet we have ever worked with. Highly recommend.

We switched to FPHS right when COVID started. We weren’t sure how our fur kids would do with the change of vet plus the new rules to protect everyone’s health. They did great and loved the entire team. Since we’ve had a few experiences of cancer scares (it wasn’t fortunately) and multiple teeth removed. The doctors have always been kind, truthful, and yet optimistic while also realistic. Drs. Scott and McDernott are truthful wonderful and you can tell care about your pet family. If you’re looking for a vet in the area, completely recommend them!
