I have had a Commerce Bank checking account for about 3 years now and I just closed it yesterday. In that time, I don't think my account has ever been insufficient. However, I recently moved and got a new bank account elsewhere and hadn't been using the Commerce one. When I went to close the account, I was told I owed them close to $300 due to some miscellaneous paypal charges that I did not authorize. After being on the phone with a bank rep and with paypal for at least an hour, I was unable to get anywhere and despite the fraudulent charges to my account, I was told I would have to pay the fees to close the account anyway. I am a recent college graduate just getting started with mountains of student loans and a small child so needless to say, I can't afford this kind of poor treatment and service from the bank I trusted. I guess we will just have to find a way to get by without grocery money the next couple of weeks. Do NOT bank with Commerce if you can help it. No matter how good and loyal of a customer you have been, they will show you no sympathy whatsoever if something happens to your account that is out of your control. All they care about is how much money they can get. The customer is secondary to their immediate profit. Luckily, after my second call to PayPal, they are being kind enough to consider paying all these fees for me as this was clearly their mistake. If not, I will be closing my PayPal account as well.
