We stopped by to inquire about adopting a dog. There was a worker standing outside when we pulled in, she asked us what we wanted and put her hand on the door to prevent us from even going inside. We said we wanted to ask about adopting a specific dog and she told us there is already too many people that have applied to adopt so we were wasting our time. She didn't offer to show us any other dogs, fill out an application, nothing. It was a very cold and rude interaction, I didn't get the feeling she cared about connecting us with an animal we could adopt. We ended up going to Lawrence Humane Society and adopting a dog.

It’s unfortunate that this humane society care s more about their friends and family getting the dogs they want than placing them in the best home. Within 30 minutes after posting the following message, they took it off. How can they say it’s not personal when they say they didn’t like me? Also, in that same 30 minutes 4 people contacted me to say they did the same to them. Do better Humane Society.
Thank you to everyone who has inquired about the status of the adoption of the sweet sheltie at the Humane Society of Atchison. I am so sad that I wasn’t given the opportunity to be considered. I did ask everyday for an application and, finally, yesterday I was told they were very busy and would send out one right away. This is a response to my efforts to be considered.
“Well, we chose who we felt fit. He needed a yard to run and a playmate. We chose who would fit best. Also, the only thing that we didn't like was you trying to go above us which there is not especially animal control. We operate with our staff, and board members promptly. He needed a fenced yard. So, unfortunately, that resulted in you not being picked. Nothing personal.”
I received this just a few minutes ago. I’m not using a name but I know there would have been no reason for them not to be excluded.
Hi Roxie — just saw your post about the dog at the humane society. Can’t figure them out at all. They posted a picture a week or so ago of an Aussie mix pup. Said to come see him or get an app online. We discussed it and went out within a couple hours of the post to meet him. Gals there told us he’d already been adopted! I looked back on the fb post and the edited part about him being adopted was less than an hour after first posting his picture. So much for filling out an application. They must have given him to the first one interested. But on this one today, they took 4 days to decide. Don’t understand their way of doing things. We were disappointed to say the least, as I’m sure you are too.

I see alot of people putting their opinion of how things should be done here. Let me remind anyone donating or adopting an animal. This is a shelter. Renaming of animals is common and should never be frowned upon if the animal has no owner. Animals won't suffer abuse or neglect by changing their name. They are highly intelligent and resilient.Adopting a shelter animal means they will need time to decompress, adjust to their new owners and home, learn new routines and manners, etc. This takes time often months and months. A potty trained animal can be potty trained and still have accidents after adopting due to the changes they are adjusting to.No one has the right to talk negatively about the way things are done here unless they are management. It's easy to point fingers when you don't have to make decisions that shelter staff have to make everyday. I only speak from my own experience and what I have observed.Be more merciful to this shelter and others.

They don't actually care about the animals. They care about the perception of how they care for the animals. You can literally get an animal taken away if you make enough false claims to these people.

We adopted a dog recently, we had the best experience with the adoption process, the staff was super friendly and knowledgeable. We couldn't have found a better match for our family. The animals and very well cared for. Forever thankful for our new family member. I highly recommend this shelter.

They were very flexible for getting us an appointment very last minute (I'm talking less than an hour heads up), the staff were very knowledgeable and transparent about their adoption process (which is extremely fair and I feel like they ensure that all of their pets go to loving homes) and we were able to find our new best friend! Could not have been a better fit for our furry friend and the Humane Society could not have been more helpful. I would recommend Humane Society of Atchison to anyone looking for a new furry friend!

It's ridiculous they change the names of the animals that are brought in, animals who are scared and already know their names. What kind of shelter does that?
