I was referred to Ann Hartz because I heard they were good and I had a complicated tax situation. The prices are much higher than other places but I figured I wanted the best of the best since my situation was unusual. I had been assured of the amounts I would owe. I paid those amounts. Months later I get letters from the IRS saying I owe $4000 more than I was told by my accountant with penalties and interest attached. When I called back and expressed how none of this was explained to me properly I was told that it was my fault, and they tried to charge me more money for them to contact the IRS and get things straightened out. After a terrible experience I find it crazy they want to take even more money from me to fix their mistake.
Edit - I am rejecting this response, because after everything has been processed and filed I contacted the office and made sure I did everything I was supposed to do, I was misadvised on actions I was supposed to take and that’s why I got the letter not because I “failed to pay the government taxes” like you mentioned in the response

They forgot to file my return! I have been a client for many years. The level of service has gone down, whilst the prices have gone up. Submitting documents to the outdated portal, making a payment and getting access to your documents is chaotic.
The icing on the cake: Whilst checking my refund status in April I found out they forgot to file the Iowa part!

Pricing went from $165.00 to $389.00 in two years. They did not inform me of the large price increase prior to using them this year. Will never take my business there again.

Absolute garbage. We were told when we left our appointment we were receiving a return. We also were not told we needed more documents before filing. I called a week later and was informed they were waiting for a CD on a house I purchased in 2021 (has zero to do with this return). I provided it immediately and a week later I called to follow up. I was asked when we were in to file, and the receptionist gave me a blanket statement that it should be good to go! I made her check my file and they still needed my CD. We submitted it again and I was informed a few days later that we owed in state and federal taxes. Ironically, Roger told us we would receive a return in one of our state taxes and our federal. They forgot one of our state returns when we went to esign. When we went to pick up our final documents the receptionist forgot our tax paperwork. If you file with them, you’ll be doing all the leg work and you’ll be reaching out to them for the entire process and pay almost $500 for the headache.

Overpriced. Was a customer for over 10 years and was told this year that it would cost a minimum of $350 to do a simple w-2. Was told it’s due to inflation. They never informed me when I set up the appointment I had to call back and ask due to a coworker telling me the price. Last year they raised the prices as well and didn’t tell me until I was in the room doing my taxes and it was $225 last year. Shady business tactics. You can find many other CPAs that charge $150-180 for the same resultsResponseYou never informed me 6 different ways so please stop lying. I never received a phone call, text, email, or letter. So please tell me these 6 ways you’ve informed all your customers. Why wouldn’t you tell your customers when they call to set up an appointment? It’s shady business when you wait until you have them in their appointment to tell them oh by the way our prices have gone up over $100. That’s should be posted online or mentioned when setting up the appointment. Please be honest instead of writing some generic response. You weren’t too sorry when I called to cancel my appointment. I was hung up on while I was still talking.

I went here a few months ago for guidance on LLC/self-employment taxes. The person I met with wasn't the most pleasant and made me feel stupid. I understand I didn't have the full details as this was all new to me, but another CPA in Des Moines was able to help me without talking down to me.

I can't say enough good things about Ann and her associates. I have worked with a number of solid CPA's over the years and Ann is on the top of the list. I highly recommend Ann for anyone that has complex investments and/or companies.

Ann and her staff take great care in everything they do. My wife recently reminded me how at our appointment last season, Ann compared that year's return against the previous year's and spotted something that looked off (significantly different mortgage interest expensive deduction). Apparently when we refinanced our mortgage in 2021 we'd failed to bring both statements to our tax preparer and had only deducted the interest for one of the two mortgages we had on our residence that year. Thanks to Ann finding this and sending in an amended return for the prior year we got more back!

We had our taxes prepared by Ann M. Hartz, CPA & Associates, and we were very happy with their work. Recently, we had a meeting with one of their accountants to discuss capital gain tax on the sale of our vacation home. They also hold an annual shred event that we just attended.

We have had our taxes prepared here for years but unfortunately this year will be our last. Without any prior notification or communication, they more than doubled their preparation fees. Over $300 for w-2 wages isn’t worth it.
