Had an amazing trip. Lots of great connections made between local people and big historical trends, wrapped in great storytelling. Would highly recommend visiting this house as a rare example of a pristine Underground Railroad stop very close to the slave state of Missouri. Also has interesting tidbits of local history of Salem, Iowa Grand Army of the Republic veterans and WWI veterans.

I attended a small group tour led by Dave and organized by my friend Jason Sole, followed by lunch and discussion at the Underground. It was a deeply powerful day -- I learned SO much and came away with a lot to reflect upon. I'm grateful to the folks at Lewelling Quaker Museum for their work uplifting a critical part of U.S. history, and sharing the strength and courage of freedom seekers and their accomplices. It's a holy place.

Located a few miles west of the Ave of the Saints, just north of the MO border we arrived and were greeted by our smiling tour guide Dave outside to start the tour. He painted the picture in our minds of what life was like in the newly Quaker settled town of Salem and the true intention when building the home was always to secretly assist freedom seekers on their journey North. Entering the home we were greeted by his wife Cathy who both articulated a vast amount of knowlege about the home, the lifestyles, the communities role, and so many stories of this part of American history. You can tell they have a passion for teaching the next generation our history and this tour is a National Treasure that you should attend.
