I've been holding on to this grudge for a while... For years I've been following this rescue. However, last month, I was unexpectedly blocked on Facebook after tagging them in a post about dogs facing euthanasia. Which I had just saved a dog and was fostering. Despite tagging various Iowa-based organizations, including Second Chance, my tag disappeared within minutes, revealing that I had been blocked. Why? Is it frowned upon to network and advocate for a dog's rescue? Blocking seems excessive. A simple untag or polite decline, saying your rescue was full would've been sufficient.
This isn't the first time I've had issues with this rescue. In March 2020, I emailed them seeking a dog's background, as their website lacked details when my family was searching for our next furry friend. Despite their website's encouragement to email or text, my email went unanswered.
Volunteering isn't an excuse for neglecting responses. If the goal is to find homes for dogs, engaging with interested individuals should be a priority, freeing up space for more rescues.
No need to unblock me now; consider it a heads-up for others and confirmation of communication issues.

I was delighted to find a rescue that features smaller dogs. I adopted a 2-yr old shih-tzu in December of '23. A bit hard to find at first but worth the trip. New dogs every week or so. Easy to navigate the website. I wish more people would adopt rescue animals. They are SO worth it!

It's unfortunate your staff is SO rude, after looking for a little more info on some dogs, we got short & snippy responses. If you don't want to respond to folks, get yourself an automated message to call in for more info. You'd think running a rescue that you'd put some effort into your responses to try and help your dogs find homes, instead you've turned us away, and looking at your other reviews, seems to be a common occurrence. Yikes!

I have been checking reviews to find a place for the stray dog I caught in our neighborhood. I was considering this place but I have to say, I quickly changed my mind. It isn't because of the reviews, it's because of the responses from the organization that I've made this choice. Very unprofessional. I run a business and it might be a different type of business but I would NEVER respond to people this way. They may not be aware but it's their first impression and it's not a good one. Not good at all. I'll keep looking. That's called trusting your gut.

I recently adopted the most precious puppy from Second Chance. It actually happened very quickly I thought. I saw the puppies on the internet, and filled out the application. Within a few days I was approved. Within a few more days our adorable pup was home with us. The process was very nice. The foster family obviously cared for the dogs in their care with so much heart. Thank you Second Chance

DO NOT SUPPORT THIS NEGLECTFUL PLACE! I'm actively working with officials to get this place shut down. I can't even call it a rescue because the conditions and treatment of the animals is so deplorable. They block all negative reviews on social media and sell sick dogs!
Reply to owner: since you do not allow replies on reviews (typical) and you blocked me from social media, I'll reply here. Actually, I HAVE been to your "rescue" and I even adopted a SICK dog from you. One who you never offered to help with vet bills or even ask if he was better. You are pathetic, there's special place in hell for people like you. You can't call a run down house with a bunch of dirty kennels stacked on top of each other a "rescue." SHAME ON YOU

SCAM! Beware! My family adopted two dogs - one dog that was supposedly 5 months old - come to find that this "puppy" was a 2-3 yr old deaf dog that is in need of a dental! Not to mention their vaccines were out of date and they have giardia, tapeworms, and an ear infection! They came home with matted hair, urine staining and feces (including mouse feces) stuck in their hair/paws.
$800 for adoption fees and $400 in vet bills and they refuse to refund even a partial of the money and told us to 'return' the dogs to them after spending $1200+? They didn't even offer to fund (even a partial payment) of the vet expensive OR the adoption fee after sending sick dogs home. I'm sure they say "he was sick when you looked at him" when my family member came in, but they plopped a soaking wet, terrified dog on the counter like 'here you go' and proceeded to say he was 'sick' when he was visibly shaking and scared. If you are pondering adopting from here let me save you - stay away from this rescue, they are just in it for the money!

During the course of looking for a rescue dog, I contacted Second Chance Dog Rescue in Prole, Iowa and sent them 2 applications (thought first one got lost), 4 texts, 3phone calls and an email. I was very interest in one or two of their dogs. Interestingly enough they seemed to have multiple 6-8 month old fluffy puppies. Since they are the first to be adopted, I can’t help but notice that nearly a month later they are still “available”. Something is wrong here. I can’t help but suspect that since I’m a retired licensed veterinarian technician, SCDR decided to keep me away from their operations. Please be very careful, there are so many scammers in this business. Never give out any money until you have that pet in your arms. The way they treated me makes me feel there’s something questionable going on in Prole, Iowa!

Too many dogs for the area. No place private to talk with lady at desk. No one has contacted us to see how our adoption is going.
