“The couple who run this hotel are great! Definitely friendly and go out of their way to make sure you are having a good stay. The beds and pillows are very comfy. Location is pretty quiet. Very clean! We stay here every time we are in town.

“This is a good place to stay and close to most everything in Ottumwa as far as restaurants and shopping. The rooms are a bit dated and I gave four stars because the curtains were shredding and things just looked a bit worn out. The rooms were clean though, as was the hotel. The staff are nice and the complimentary breakfast was hot and there was a lot of variety. One day biscuits and gravy and waffles and sausage. The next day scrambled eggs and bacon with fried potatoes.

Rooms: Dated and worn looking in the room we had. Things were very clean though.

Nearby activities: Close to most everything.

Food & drinks: Good, hot complimentary breakfast.”

“This is a unique property. Part of the charm is its age (If I remember correctly, it was built in 1917). However, there are some things that probably should be addressed. The marble stairs leading into the lobby are warped due to age and wear, and could cause someone to lose their balance.

There were antique items throughout the property such as an old switchboard in the lobby.

We noticed some things in our room where the building had been updated to code. This includes having a fire sprinkler system that was installed well after the the original building as there was piping along the ceiling. There was a ramp on the side of the building which could be used with the luggage cart. Again, part of the age off the building, just stating that so people know what to expect.

The service was good. There was a limited selection made-to-order breakfast included with the room. We're vegetarian, so when we asked for no meat the waitress offered us fresh fruit without us asking. This was nice.

Parking is limited and the hotel is on a one-way street.

Overall this hotel is a decent value.”
