MidWestOne (MWO) Bank is the worst bank I have ever dealt with. It took four months for them to gather all the information, from my husband and me, needed to close on our build loan. This is because they would consistently ask for more information or the same information previously given to them. We said we were putting $50,000 down on the construction loan and final paperwork came to our lawyer with $30,000 down. This is partially because they kept adding $20,000 to our construction loan for a balance on a prior land loan we borrowed from First National Bank. This had been paid off for at least two months. MWO was told this at least three times! So the morons took the $20,000 off the down payment I said I would make. We were told we would get 4.5%, but because these idiots kept prolonging the process; it was moved to 5.25%. We pay our home insurance and property taxes in full once/year. I told the loan officer this, but she added escrow for the two items. I pointed this out and she couldn't give me a straight answer as to why. We were so far invested at this point, that we decided to deal with it. She wanted to do this all via the WEB site and email so wouldn't answer our questions half the time. It's like she had never processed a loan before, but we know she has had this position for quite some time (years). She blamed a lot on "corporate." Maybe it was all corporate, but someone is terrible at customer service. We also have our business account thru FNB, so this got transferred to MWO. We asked for a withdrawal from the business account and they take it from the personal account.

We have been banking at MidWestOne for over 30 years. In those years we have always been treated with respect and have been given great service. We bank at the Rochester Branch.

I was having a bad day and took it out on my bank. I admit my fault. They're actually very kind!

I have been a member for well over a decade. While the customer service isn't the friendliest, the tellers always see to my needs efficiently. I usually get out of there within five minutes, regardless of my purpose for being there.

Interest rates were low, so I thought I'd refinance my mortgage. Everything's going well, numbers look good, credit score is fine, papers are filled out, and then...they want more info. I oblige. And more info. And I oblige. And the loan officer's anxious to get my check for fees, and I oblige. And then they want my entire divorce decree, and I said: what? A decree's not just about one person; it involves everyone in your family. And no, I am not handing over other people's personal information to a bank so that I can get a mortgage that they have nothing to do with. Well, the MWO officer said, they want to make sure I don't have any other legal obligations -- and then told me it was required by federal law. Which is garbage. Of course it isn't required. They already had all the info related to child support income. I could have had other legal obligations all over the place that they'd have had no idea about, but if you're a woman and they hear "divorced", apparently they want a nice root through whatever they can get their hands on -- and then they want to keep the info. I walked away, which surprised the young loan officer, because I guess in his world it's normal to treat other people's private financial and medical information like garbage. Paying me back my money was apparently inconvenient and expensive for MWO, but that's fine. If you're going to be part of an industry that just up and robs people, and then after it all falls apart you freak out and decide you just have to x-ray your customers' lives and the lives of everyone they've been connected to and mine as much private info as you can, then sure, you can be inconvenienced. Here's what I'd like to go back to: the world of normal banks that had very boring accounts and held mortgages themselves instead of deciding they're bigtime players in debt markets. I would like to stop seeing young people who just need jobs being turned into unethical operators by these places, too, and being told it's just what you have to do.

I needed to get some quarters for laundry. I walked in and asked if I could get two rolls as change for a twenty. However, policy is only to do such services for members, which I was informed of mechanically by the teller. I then walked to Wells Fargo, where I received the quarters I needed without being a member by a very friendly teller.

I needed to simply verify one small piece of information with someone at this bank. It would have saved a mutual customer a great deal of time and trouble. They absolutely refused to provide a simple answer to a yes or no question that had absolutely nothing to do with the privacy of the customers information. Their policies are not customer service friendly and are not based in any form of common sense. They weren't even apologetic about it.

A previous reviewer (in 2010, perhaps) advised readers to stay away from Midwestone's online banking. My 2 cents: Firstly, I'd recommend this bank for the good customer service I received from it since 1999, as well as its role in the Iowa City community in general. Secondly, the web interface - at least in 2014- is functional, albeit no-frills and ripe for redesign. Thirdly, the management seems willing to listen to customer feedback.
Unless you are particularly picky about online banking, your experience with this bank should be just as good as with any of the established local banks in Iowa City.
