Beware! Watch with these guys are charging you if you buy anything except gas!At the same time, I went in for an ice cream, and my friend went in for a water. He overcharged my friend $0.30 and me 80 cents. When we pointed out the discrepancies, the person was very rude. I won't be visiting there again!

I'm used to going to the location downtown, which is one of my go-to places to take friends and family when they visit and want to get something local. Since Sundays are usually packed and the wait is long, I decided to go with this Eastside Location. I can't say I was too happy with my experience. We ordered the fish basket with sweet potato fries and baked beans, a bowl of chili, and a Mac n cheese meal with broccoli cheddar soup and potato salad. We received what looked like a side of Mac n cheese which didn't match what the menu described as "generous portion" and did not receive the potato salad side. The sweet potato fries were cold and soggy. My chili was good, so I was happy about that at least. I called back into the restaurant once I saw my order and the individual who picked up was nice, but when addressing my concerns with the manager, I overheard them on the phone speaking very rudely to her and heard him say "well, what does she want then?!" She then proceeded to tell me that the portion I received is considered the dinner size and that there is nothing that can be done, but that the potato salad can be prepared for me to come back and pick it up. The side was not worth going back just to pick up so I asked if it can be comped for another time I go and was told it was busy so I'll have to call back later. Today is my mom's birthday and Hamburg Inn is what she wanted, but we were both very disappointed. I ordered my food to go as I had family in town and what I received was not what I expected from a local favorite. I'll be taking the extra time and steps to go to the location downtown instead.

We have wanted to try this location near us since we moved to the East Side. Everything was great. The ambience is cozy despite the gas station parking lot location. The waitress greeted us warmly and was attentive during our stay. We both ordered breakfast on Sunday morning and both felt everything was cooked to perfection. The hash brown were SO moist and yet crispy. Can't wait to eat here again.

Great little place to grab gas, snacks, gum. A variety of folks work there, all reasonable kind and ok to deal with. Has coffee, donuts, and f'real shakes. Teeny selection of "old fashioned " candy like laffy taffy, candy cigarettes, tootsie roll pops and blow pops.

Day off = finally trying Hamburg Inn East! We love the Hamburg downtown and now we love this one too. Food & service very good! But it always has been :). There is a bit of a different vibe here and we'll definitely be back.

Do you like pie and ice cream but find that it's WAY too much work to get out the pie, cut a piece from the pie, get out the ice cream, scoop some out and then get a fork and a spoon to eat it? Then you might want to try the awesome pie shakes at Hamburg Inn where you get your pie (including the crust) and your ice cream in a one cup that you can eat with a straw. This is only one of the reasons why Hamburg Inn #2 (East) is a great place to eat in Iowa City. Their food is a good price and you get a lot for it. A large entree, a potato and a bread side for breakfast or an entree with one or two sides for dinner. It's important that the food is cheap so you can easily afford it and feed a lot of people for not as much money but it's also good when you get a lot so you can get full for a good price or take home leftovers like I do everytime. They also have a good selection of food. Not too many options and not too little. They have a lot of traditional things on the menu like burgers, omelettes and french toast. Or a couple more out of the box things like the amazing pie shakes or fluffy sweet potato pancakes. The kind of food they offer is good for a picky person or kids, who can get more traditional things they know they will like and for the person who thinks a shake with pie in it sounds awesome. The selection is good for the indecisive people and it makes the process of ordering a little easier so you don't get overwhelmed but if you go here as often as I do then you can eventually get to try everything ;) including the good selection of pie shakes. Another things about the Hamburg Inn is the great service. You will be seated fast if not right away and you wait a reasonable time if not a fast amount of time for your food. The staff is also attentive and they know the menu. You can usually get in and out of this restaurant pretty fast. It is a seat yourself and the menu is pretty basic so when the food comes pretty fast as well it your meal goes even faster which can be good for a family, if you don't have as much time to eat or if you just want a quick meal that isn't too formal. The staff also know the menu, can make recommendations and help you decide what you want if needed. Some people might not like Hamburg Inn or the East location in specific because it is too small and the tables are too close together. Also if the tables are full, as they sometimes are, there isn't really a good location to wait either. This is all true, however it is a small location next to a gas station and a lot of people still don't know about it, although they aren't as new anymore, so they aren't usually too full. When the tables are full though, while there may not be a convenient location to wait it is a pretty fast place to dine so if you decide to stay chances are you won't be waiting long for a table. 15 to 20 minutes tops which the beats the wait at the downtown location by far. So in conclusion if you are looking for a pretty fast, good food, easy going diner try Hamburg Inn #2 (East).

there may still be people who don't know that this place exists. it's actually an extension of the BP gas station across from Regina High School. it truly is a smaller version of the Linn Street Hamburg Inn with the same menu and quirky staff. it's still working on achieving the same smell and ambiance, but that takes time and happens in layers. smile. there are mostly tables, no booths, and high chairs pulled up to a shelf looking out the front window if you want your burger with a view of the gas pumps, but it's still a Hamburg with vintage photos on the walls of the early days of the first one. we had great burgers, fries, onion rings and mushrooms. stop in and check it out.

Great east side location. It's nice to have an alternative to blackstone or Panera. The sweet potato pancakes are the best (and HUGE, so be hungry when you order them). Very friendly staff!

This is plain ol' Iowa breakfast. Tons of good food, friendly, great service and the Hamburg atmosphere! Yum!

The potatoes in the potato salad were literally raw. The cook actually forgot to boil the potatoes and just went ahead and made the salad anyway.

A little smaller, and not quite as nostalgic as the magical one downtown. But on the plus side it's on the East side of Iowa city and has easier parking. As a place to grab a hearty breakfast with boyfriend before work, or daily activities it's a win. Its cozy, aka a bit tight between tables, but they make it work. Food is still made with care and with a great selection to choose from. I think we could easily make this a regular place to grab and early breakfast.

I was excited that Hamburg Inn opened an East side location. That is - until I tried it. I went there and ordered a cheeseburger and fries to go. I was asked how the burger should be cooked. I said medium well. I took it home to my son and he didn't finish it - unusual for him. Then I saw how pink it was inside. Yuck. And the fries were not quite done either - they were droopy. Ten dollars for not so good food is sad. I did not say or indicate that I was in a hurry. I said, "That's fine." When told it would be ten minutes and sat down and read. Burgers should be thourougly cooked and fries should be easy at a restaurant like this.

This place is small and our food was not very good. Took awhile, only to get fish that was still frozen in the middle. We sent it back and ordered breakfast instead, that was nothing great either. Perkins or Village Inn beats this any day.
