one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had. They're currently trying to charge me for an extra day despite having returned the car before the agreed-upon return time. Payless' general customer service line is worse than useless, their online portal is even worse than that. I had to call the airport authority hoping they would talk to the local manager. Still waiting for some sort of resolution to the extra $188 they're trying to charge me.

When we got to the Des Moines airport the line of 12 people in front of the wife to get a car. Line moved fast enough. Got a red Mitsubishi Outlander. Wife hated the shift lever. Otherwise, didn’t have any issues with the car. Loved having the back up camera and the SiriusXM radio. No morning talk shows, no commercials. Easy enough returning the car also. No extra charges so far. Rented the car June 20 to 25.

Nobody ever answers the phone and they charged me extra fees months later... I rented a car in March and just saw they charged my credit card 2 different times for $12 recently.

I order a car through Priceline and paid in pull and when I picked up the car, the counter guy had me swipe my card again but for the whole amount instead of the deposit only. Come to find out after returning the car, they charged me again for the car rental. Also, when I dropped the car off, no one was at the counter to drop the keys too so I left them in the drop box and looking at the charges, they charged me for an additional day because they didn't check it in the same day I returned it. This was the 2nd times I rented here, the first time, no issues and now this. I will NOT be renting with Payless Car Rental anymore.

Very disappointed. Made a reservation but no one was at the desk, despite a closing time of 10pm. I understand that problems come up, but there is no discernable way to contact customer service.

2 weeks ago I booked a rental truck from Payless because I am doing school 2 hours from Des Moines. I arrived on my flight last night and went to the rental desk and they said they have no vehicles available at all even if I had a reservation and said I’ll just have to go find a taxi. So then I had to pay an outrageous rate to have a taxi take me 2 hours away and I’m walking to and from school because I don’t have a rental vehicle. The only thing they gave me when questioned about it, was a paper to call and get a refund ?. Not Impressed at all.

One of the smoothest experiences I have had with renting a car. I wasn't at the counter even 10 minutes. They didn't have the mid-size I requested so upgraded me to a minivan. No hidden fees, no hassle. Returning the car was just as smooth. I gave them my ending mileage and had filled it up within 1/2 mile of the airport. Returning it took less than 5 minutes.

Very easy for pick up and drop off. Car was great and when we asked if they had a specific model car she checked and they did.

If you want to run the risk of dying in a car accident then Payless is the rental car company for you. On January 7th I rented a Kia from this location. They gave me a car with 4 bald tires. Of course I didn't realize this until after a snow storm when I couldn't get any traction. While I waited for resolve I read reviews to find that this is common.Update: They charged me for returning the car late 2 weeks after the car was returned. It was late because they gave me tires, I couldn't drive on.

I would avoid renting from this place at all cost. It has been a nightmare with the greedy people trying to charge more than what they originally estimated to charge first off our reserved the car on Priceline and I paid in full for the car at Priceline and then when I return the car, they charged me again at the end plus a couple of additional hours said that I was late turning the car in actually I was two hours early turning the car in and I photographed it so that I would have proof and then after telling me that they never got the money from Priceline they refused to give me a refund on their side so now I’ve been arguing with Priceline for over two weeks now trying to get my money from them and it’s just going around and around. I’ve paid double for the car and there’s just so many lies that I had to prove that I was correct and I have rented a lot of cars and never encountered anything like this so make sure you take lots of photos of video of you handing the key back to the person at the counter, because they will say that you kept the car longer than you did it it was just an awful experience and I still haven’t got my refund from them or Priceline for the overcharge so if you wanna pay dearly rent from this place and you will pay . No American customer service whatsoever. I had to prove everything about the rental. Just a terrible experience never seen anything like this from a rental car company..

Horrible place! Do not recommend. My husband reserved a car for work. When he landed in Iowa and he was stranded because they gave his car away. They told him “sorry about your luck.” This is very unsafe especially to individuals who travel to new places and don’t have other ways to get around an area unknown to them. Shame on them!
