I absolutely love the ARL and what they are about

TLDR; The ARL is a deceitful organization, with zero remorse.
The lack of communication between staff is heartbreaking. My parents found a small, lost puppy and brought her to the ARL to determine if she was chipped and receive preliminary medical assistance. They were told the ARL couldn't view the animal without her being surrendered - this should have immediately been a red flag. My parents felt forced into surrendering her and then later, made to feel guilty about doing so.
My parents told the ARL that they wanted the original owners, who had lost this puppy, to have the opportunity to come forward and claim her. However, my parents were adamant that they wanted to adopt this puppy if the owner didn't come forward; they had come to love the puppy during their short time with her. The ARL told my parents that they would contact them as soon as the puppy was available. At this time, the ARL never stated that the puppy was going to be put into foster care nor made available for adoption.
My mother was so enamored with this puppy and worried about her wellbeing, that she called the ARL nearly every day to check-in on her condition. She even made sure that this wouldn't be too bothersome to the staff - they, once again, assured her that it wouldn't be a problem. The staff told her repeatedly that (1) the puppy was doing well and (2) my parents were the first ones on the list for her adoption. Simply put, every single staff member LIED to my parents.
The ARL told my parents that the puppy was too young to adopt, but after about 8 weeks (and her spay appointment) she would be available. After this conversation, my parents purchased $500+ of puppy food, toys, materials, etc. They even began the process of establishing new veterinary care closer to their home.
When my mother called to check-in about 1.5 weeks away from this timeline as suggested by the ARL, she was told that, "the puppy was no longer in the ARL's care." The staff alluded that this puppy was being kept by the foster family and/or already adopted by someone else. I strongly feel that the ARL had never had any intention of giving my parents the opportunity to adopt her.
The biggest disappointments in this organization are as follows: (1) guilting individuals for bringing in lost animals, (2) lying about their adoption processes, and (3) zero communication between staff.
I will not be adopting nor fostering with this organization ever again.

The arl has the responsibility of cremating my son's cat after it had to be euthanized. They ended disregarding what was on the paperwork and had him burnt with other animals so we were unable to get his ashes back. Shame on you arl.

I would give five stars originally , however I am only giving one. Earlier this week my grandmother had relinquished her cats to the shelter and normally they do NOT hold them for owners. However we were in direct contact with Abby from ARL and they said they’d rather keep them in the family instead of transferring them to some stranger all together! We asked for them to be placed in a foster home until we could arrive and pick said cats up. (We reside in Colorado) Well Sunday we tried to reach out on behalf of my grandmother to pick up the cats for today (Monday the 28th) now it is currently 4:55 the morning nearing the time we have to leave and still nothing. I feel powerless and heartbroken to say the least. We were given the foster homes address but no contact information. These will be the last remaining thing of my grandmother and I wanted so desperately to take care of them into their old age. However ARL did not allow this to happen… definitely think before choosing to do any business with them. If you’re going though hard times especially…..

A Place that's great to add a new member to your family. Just noted that if your looking to adopt a dog make sure you bring any you currently live with for a meet and greet. Or you'll have to reschedule a meet and greet and that's no guaranty that they'll still need there as they don't hold animals for people

Me and my boyfriend got a dog from here. Come to find out she had kennel cough and a double ear infection. Staff wouldn’t answer calls and still hasn’t sent us any of her records! Didn’t give her a vaccination that she needed and left us to pay for it with a 2 days notice. I wish i would’ve known this place was like this. I would recommend going to the Ames Animal shelter for an animal!

You guys are completely full. And want to charge to much money for a dog that is 6 months to 6 years. When I can get a puppy for less than that. Why do you think that you are full. Because it cost more to rescue then it does to get a puppy.

The ARL's food pantry has saved my butt a couple times- thank you! Helping animals find homes and families- and then helping provide resources for those families stay together is truly good work?

I was in a emergency situation where I had to give up my pets immediately. I tried to get the ARL to help but was told that I would have to wait 11-14 days before I get a interview just to talk about surrendering them. I'm currently in a intensive inpatient PTSD course provided by the American Lake VA Hospital in Washington State. I was given 4 days to find homes for my dogs (kids) and the best that they can do is 11-14 days. Unacceptable this is a emergency situation for me and my pets who I'm not wanting to give up but have to in order for me to have a somewhat normal life. There's only 2 things that matter in life to me 1. My dogs. 2. My health. That's it and me being homeless with 4 pets is not a option. The ARL should be called "The when and if we want to help you animal rescue league."

Awful experience at the SE 14th location with my grandkids today. We were looking for a dog and see some outside in cages. No signs what so ever!! So we assume it’s ok to just look but of course know, common sense, not to touch the dogs! A red headed lady named Alexis comes out and VERY rudely says “who gave you permission to be out here you cannot be out here” my son told her she didn’t need to be rude and could have simply told us. She tried saying “that’s what I said. But that is absolutely not how she approached us or how she said it at all. There should be signs above the doors saying staff or something to that effect if it’s a “safety issue” as she claimed. She immediately went to the girl at the front desk and that person was shaking her head and rolling her eyes also. Customer service needs to be a training point at this location!

The staff makes nasty and threating calls to you if you drop off a stray animal. They accuse you of abandonment and neglect and threatened to have you arrested. I will never deal with the ARL again! The whole staff was rude, unprofessional and intimidating. What a farce for a business that "supposedly" helps animals to conduct business this way.
