I spent over $35,000. This was the first time dealing with the Honda in Ames, instead of Des Moines, and will be my last.
At first, I thought my experience may be was a fluke, until I found out my coworker's son had almost the same thing happen to him about a year or two ago.
I was told the morning of me signing papers, that my car would no longer come with the Honda warranty, like originally advertised. The $27,000 listed price stayed the same, and I ended up purchasing a separate warranty for $3000.
When test driving the car, I was told it had not been touched, but come pick up, its going to look "amazing". However, come pick up, it was far from. I was initially being talked to like my concerns were not a big deal, and that it's a used car, so things wouldn't be "perfect". The trunk quite literally looked like a bear had been back there with deep scratches and scuffs everywhere. The ceiling fabric had stains, the interior looked like it had been wiped with a rag, there was gunk and dust in my air vents, center council, door handle, ect. Streaks on the odometer screen and review mirror. I was told how many of the stains could be taken off away right there with some Windex and how, "Oh I know what that is, it's ketchup." (on the ceiling) A new to me car, from a certified Honda dealership, should not be looking like this.
The outside had some dings, deep scratches, and paint chip on the side. After continuing to point things out, I am told that they "Normally don't do these things until they know the car is sold anyway," which doesn't make sense to me, as all cars at a dealership are cleaned to pristine condition in order to sell quick on the lots. Mind you, I said I wanted this car 5 days prior, and was told to give them two days to get everything up to warranty expectations.
Anyways, after explaining I just spent $35,000 on this car, I should not have to personally take Windex to clean the ketchup off the ceiling and clean the interior myself, they offer me a WE OWE YOU, to bring the car in and do some "touch ups."
They said they do not have detailers on site, and they come in on the weekends. This car was most definitely not professionally detailed the weekend prior to me picking up the car.
They were very helpful on getting me financed without a cosigner, however, had to run my credit twice, to multiple credit unions, due to an error on their end with the type of car I needed financed for.

I’ve bought a used Honda CRV from Honda Ames approximately $16,000 value drove over an hour to get to the dealership after purchasing the car. I asked the salesman if they fill the tank with fuel and he said that’s against our policy so I had about enough gas to go across the street to the local Casey’s where I filled my own tank..
I also bought a Honda from Dewey Ford in Ankeny - used Honda pilot they sent me home with a full tank of fuel as part of the customer appreciation .

I have a really good time picking a car at this Honda dealership. Cam Evens was really great at helping us make a decision on a car and he also did a great job on answers our very specific question on the cars that we were looking at. My family has gotten 2 cars from here and the people here are very helpful.

Bought a Chevy van from them. Paid cash got Less than two weeks after getting its front low beam went out check engine light came on for the cat. They said because it had over 80000 miles they wouldn’t do anything. Plus we could have got the warranty for vehicle over those miles. But the never offered it and won’t talk to me now. I would go else where to get any new cars. They only want your money

Cam was super helpful. Started by asking great questions to filter through what I was looking for. Very knowledgeable about everything. Worked really hard to make sure we walked away with deal we were hoping for.

Chris is an absolute pleasure to work with. I've worked with her twice now and couldn't be happier. She's patient, courteous, and honest. You couldn't ask for a better sales associate. 10/10, will be working with her for any future car purchasing needs.

Shout out to Mel! He diagnosed an issue with my wiper blades over the phone and fixed it over my lunch break.

I'm a long time customer of Honda of Ames. I've brought two different Hondas in for service in the past, and mostly had positive experiences. Communication from the service department has been lacking (saying they would call, and then don't, and I have to follow-up), as well as one time billing me significantly more than was estimated, but overall happy with the quality of the service.
This week I had a negative sales experience though. I went in to purchase my first new vehicle from them, and I called the Sales Department to ask if they were still honoring their "Invoice Pricing" Memorial Day sale. I was told yes, they were, until the end of May. I stated that I was interested in a new Honda CR-V. "Perfect, there's one still on the lot." I asked if I could get the car in a different color. "That's no problem, we'll trade with another local dealership to get the color you want." I asked if I could have the price of the vehicle over the phone, and was told no, but that I could come in-person to receive the invoice pricing information. I drove to Ames that evening from the Des Moines metro, and was then told, "Well, unfortunately, the invoice pricing sale is not valid for the CR-V that we have on the lot, and we won't be getting anymore CR-V's that the invoice pricing would apply. We can sell you the vehicle for MSRP though!" What. You just told me on the phone 30 minutes ago that the invoice price WOULD apply. I felt lied to and misled. The Sales person knew upon arrival that they couldn't honor the invoice pricing sale. If they learned that they couldn't honor the price between when I called at 5:05 pm and when I arrived at 5:35 pm, why didn't he call and update me, so I didn't waste the time, money, and energy just to be told no in-person. He said he would speak to the Sales Manager the following day and give me a call. Guess what: no call or email from Honda of Ames. Very disappointed. I recommend working with one of the two Honda dealerships in Des Moines, especially if you live in Des Moines.

Wildly overprice service part.
I fully understand and expect to pay a premium for anything that says Honda on the box. But Honda of Ames takes it to a different level. I went in to buy 2 gallons of Honda brand coolant. Total bill 79.18 (37.00 per gal). That is 70% over Honda’s list price. Amazon will deliver next day for $56.50. The next Honda dealership to the south sells this for $46.44. I gave them 2 stars because they had it in stock, but I don’t need to go back into their parts department.

Great at selling cars, terrible at maintaining them. Employees all seem to be on some sort of power trip and refuse to provide quality or timely service.
Went to dealer with car they had diagnosed a problem with earlier but which they couldn't fix due to stocking issues in repair part earlier (diagnose, no fix, still charge). Returned, and after waiting excessively long made an appointment to fix issue. Sent in for expensive repairs just to find out they hadn't been done upon return. Upon inquiry, they admitted they hadn't fixed it as the initial diagnosis was incorrect but refused to either admit their failure to rectify the issue until confronted or to offer so much as a discount. Go to literally any other Iowa Honda dealer before dealing with this excuse of a dealership.

Took Way longer than any other dealerships, no wiggle room on prices either. The salesman was Rude and just plain awful especially after having to go to the bank to get the check for the car. Definitely don't recommend.

Please note that leasing a vehicle comes with the risk of forfeiting the $4,000 security deposit in the event of a total loss. Additionally, purchasing a car at this time may result in significant interest payments of $7,000.
