Over the last 15 years, we have had multiple experiences with the staff at the clinic caring for our old lady pup, Abby. Dr. Susan Fraley was the on-call vet when we took our Abby girl in for help last night. Dr. Fraley was extremely helpful in diagnosing the disease that our old girl was suffering from and was kind, compassionate, and caring when we made the heart-wrenching decision for our girl to go over the rainbow bridge. We will be forever grateful for Dr. Fraley and her staff's passion for humane care for our fur baby and ourselves.

They seemed to be more interested in making a research subject of my cat and making a name for themselves via a journal paper than what was in her best interests. I would take my cat to a school of veterinary medicine again for diagnosis and treatment but it definitely would NOT be Purdue. On the other hand, I have heard very good things about the Univ of Illinois SVM.

This review is for the orthopedic specialists at Purdue Veterinary School and Small Animal Hospital. Our dog, Pancho, had corrective surgery on 1/10/24 to fix an angular limb deformity. Our experience with Purdue was incredible. Thank you Dr. Kim, Dr. Rochat, Dr. Nelson, RVT Anna Ihrie, and Rhett McCutchan. You all took such good care of Pancho and of us - and now he is on the road to a better quality of life. Pancho developed an angular limb deformity during his first year. At first his paws just looked like normal dachshund mix paws - but it quickly became clear that his paw was not growing normally. We took him to a specialist near us who said it would take three separate surgeries to correct the deformity and would cost ~ $10,000. Obviously, this was not something that we could afford, but more importantly, we did not want to put our little guy through three major surgeries. We then worked on giving him the best quality of life to accommodate the deformity, such as using a stroller, so he could still enjoy longer walks, pain management with heat pads and massages. But around his fourth birthday, it became obvious that things were just going to get harder for him as he got older. That's when a friend told us about Purdue Veterinary School. She had brought her dog who had a rare form of cancer here, and said they had an innovative approach to fixing complex health issues. So we drove 2.5 hours down to Lafayette and met with the orthopedic team to see what options we could explore. We were pleasantly surprised when they told us that they have done many surgeries like this before, and Panchos paw could be fixed in one surgery, and it would cost us less than half the initial price we were quoted! We set up the appointment and were eager but also nervous as this would be the first time Pancho was getting a major surgery. To say that the team at Purdue was spectacular would be an understatement. We were very nervous about the entire procedure, and they took extra time and care to answer all of our questions, and reassure us that Pancho would get the best care possible. They have a huge team of orthopedic surgeons and board-certified anesthesiologists that would be closely monitoring Pancho to ensure his safety during the almost 2 hour surgery. They called us the morning of the surgery to check in, before the surgery started, after the surgery was completed and would call every evening while Pancho was recovering to give an update on how he was doing. We could tell that he was in very good hands, and that they were giving him lots of love, which made the entire process so much easier for us. They were also very transparent about what medications they would be giving Pancho, what the entire surgery wouldn't entail, and we were able to meet most of his surgery team beforehand, which was really nice. When we finally got to pick up Pancho, they were very clear about his care instructions and continued to call after we went home to check in with us. The entire surgery ended up costing us just under $4000 and Pancho is already trying to use his paw and is in high spirits. We are so thankful we found Purdue Small Animal Hospital and will be recommending them to anyone who is looking for specialty care for their pets. The only piece of feedback that we would give, and this is minor, is that there was a little bit of confusion about which day Pancho would actually be having the surgery. We found out when he dropped him off that his surgery would actually be the next day, which meant that we had to pick him up later than we had planned for. Luckily, our accommodation was a friend we were staying with, so we were able to adjust. But this may have been a little bit harder for those who need to stay at a hotel and are coming from far away. Again, very minor and did not have a huge impact for us, but worth noting for future patients to clarify expectations and timeline around when the surgery is taking place and when they should be ready to pick up their pet. THANK YOU PURDUE SMALL ANIMAL HOSPITAL!

This is a poor excuse for an emergency clinic. After asking me a couple questions about my dog they basically told me over the phone that the issue is not an emergency and to call my vet but no vet clinics are open at 5 am. So my dog is panting and in obvious pain but it's not an emergency. Purdue should be ashamed of this joke of an "emergency" vet. Guess I'll go to Urbana (U of I) or Indy.

I don’t write many reviews.. However, after taking a look at the low rating on the reviews, and then, consequently reading the reviews, I was so disappointed. Majority of the low reviews have to do with the high cost of someone’s veterinary care… And I have a few comments I would like to make:1. If you have a pet, make sure you can afford to take care of it. It is not the veterinary hospital or any veterinarians problem that you took in a pet that you cannot afford. Animals, like humans have emergencies and those emergencies are very expensive. Ensure you are planning for that or get insurance. I was a college student and had a pet that I could not afford… That is my fault/problem not theirs.2. To say that the veterinarians are in it for the money is a slap in the face to the entire profession. They have high debt to income ratio due to veterinary school yet their salaries are not as high as you would expect… They cannot care for every animal that walks through their doors for free. Otherwise they would make no money and that hospital would close.3. Veterinary medicine utilizes the same materials, Instruments, etc as human medicine. And just like human medicine, costs have gone up… Therefore, veterinary medicine will go up as well.4. This last point that I am making is incredibly sad to me and why I am so passionate about leaving this review… Veterinarians have one of the highest rates of suicide over any profession. And it’s not because they have to euthanize animals, that is actually one of the lowest Contributors to the suicide rate. It’s bc of the low income to stress ratio and the people that belittle and yell at them saying they are greedy horrible human beings that only care about money. They are not in it for the money, if they were they know human medicine is the way to go… but they love animals and helping your pets.So before you go off on a veterinarian or veterinary clinic/hospital because you cannot afford the cost of taking care of your pet.. think about everything I said above.I’m a Purdue Alumni who majored in animal sciences, I didn’t go the vet route due to the salary to debt/stress ratio. NOT because I didn’t want to help animals… I’ve been a client there for many years and out of the 5 ER visits I’ve been to, 4/5 have been perfect. Just like a human hospital, they have a lot of patients. Expect the same wait time here. But know you are getting the best care possible with every specialist you could need under one roof.

I grew up in the area and am a Purdue grad, I’m extremely disappointed at the costs they are charging now, there were always a place we could bring the horses for good care at a reasonable cost. When I took my working dogs for their annual visits, Dr Thompson came across as a bully telling me the list of “national standards” regarding shots and testing because I prefer titers and said legally he couldn’t examine one of my dogs because he hadn’t had a rabies shot in the last 3 years, even tho his titers show he has sufficient antibodies. How about Purdue uses their influence to change Indiana laws to allow titers instead of supporting injecting dogs unnecessarily, especially when it can cause harm.I was also double charged for the visit. She had me scan my card twice, said it didn’t go through the first time. I just happened to take a look at my charges and see the double charge. I know mistakes happen but let’s take the money out of your account for a few weeks and see how you feel about it.They are charging the same or more than local veterinarians. They have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the community and give back, and they are absolutely missing this chance. So much for any interest in offering alumni donations.

Dr. Shalvey and Sean Anderson are everything you're looking for in any veterinary situation. Their level of detail surpassed anything we've ever witnessed in healthcare before. They gave us hope and confidence when we needed it most. We are forever thankful for them. Thank you to everyone at Purdue Veterinary Hospital. Highly recommend. WE GOT OUR BUDDY HOME!!!

Amazing!! Dr. Shalvey, and Sean Anderson were absolutely incredible, and I cannot recommend them enough. Not only did they save our dog's life, they were also kind, professional, knowledgeable, patient, and compassionate to us the entire time. The level of care they provided is unlike anything I've ever seen before (not kidding when I say I wish they were my doctors). If you ever need to bring your four-legged family member to Purdue, I hope you're lucky enough to get these two on your case.

They were very compassionate since we had to make the decision to put our fur baby of 16 years down. Did not push any extra services. Was pleasantly surprised that our bill was actually affordable!

Liars and thieves. That's what it all boils down to. Let me start by saying that I have waited a couple of months to post this review. I wanted time to calm down and write it with a clear train of thought. Unfortunately, we were referred to Purdue by our vet after all the tests they could perform came back inconclusive. It was a 2 1/2 hr drive. Upon arrival we had a sit down with a vet. We explained our cat's symptoms and what our vet had tested for. Let me also say that we KNEW our cat was not looking good. Being a part of our family for ten years, you tend to know when they are not well and their degree of pain. Before they would even take him, we were informed that we were looking at a bill of 2-3k and they would need half of the estimate up front. How can you come up with those kind of numbers without even looking at him? We asked SEVERAL TIMES if it was worth it or if we should consider euthanizing him. Every time we were reassured that he would be fine, they just needed to run some tests. Once again, they HAVE NOT even peered into the cage, let alone inspected him. In hindsight, I guess they'd do just about anything for the chance to play doctor. After receiving their payment of $1700, they took him behind closed doors and told us they would "be in touch" and that "no news was good news". We would get random reports over the phone but every time they made it seem as if he was pulling through. Then, on the morning of the third day, he passed. We made the 2 1/2 hr drive back to collect his body and pay the rest of our bills. We never received any explanation of what afflicted him or even what ultimately caused his demise. To put icing on the cake, they hit us with a bill of $3700! Not only did they rob us of our money, they robbed us of the chance to be with him as he passed and they did it with a smile on their lying faces. Next time, I would rather watch my pet suffer than take them to the forked tongue tyrants that make up Purdue University.

We were able to visit Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine for a school event. They teachers and staff were very friendly and gave a well guided tour and explanation of the campus. They also answered every question we threw at them.

We have two Korat cats. One developed a bald patch that has spread to her whole hind end. In fact I have given her the nickname of Baboon Butt. They have a well run clinic. Very efficient at gathering her medical records. Then you meet with two vet nurse techs. Then they go out and staff the case with the feline dermatologist. Then the dermatologist comes in and reviews everything with you. Explains what tests are needed. A complete list of the differential diagnosis was reviewed with us. While the diagnosis is not finalized yet, it wasn't what we wanted to hear. Our cat is neurotic. We will see if any of the meds work in her. At least we know she isn't in a life threatening situation and she isn't in pain or anything. Dr. Gomes was her doctor.
