Bought 3 cantaloupe and 3 watermelon on July 5th, all were not good, spit worthy. We were specifically told they were locally grown, but the identifying stickers did not say Indiana melons so we are 99.5% sure they arent Indiana melons. If you read Indiana Prairie Journal, an article states if you buy any melons around 4th of July, they wont be Indiana melons as they were late getting them out and wont be available until late July.Bottom line, we literally spit out $25 by not going with our gut. If you buy melons from here and want Indiana melons, make sure the sticker states Indiana melons. Go with your gut and eyes, not with what you are told.Coincidentally, we stopped at two more places right across the road after buying our melons and these places had no Indiana melons. They both told us at least 2 more weeks for local Indiana melons...not more than 100 yards away from Prairie Acres. Should have went to those places first. On a good note, the reason for 2 stars, not zero stars, we bought day old sweet corn at Prairie Acres, 13 ears for $2.50 and it was outstanding. Corn was 5 stars.Update: I grew up in Palestine, Il and had Indiana melons my whole life. My watermelon tasted rotten, like they were stored in a hot box/ heat abused and the cantalope was edible. If they were Indiana melons, they were the worst ever. Still dont know why the other stands in the area did not have any melons as we hit all the stands between Prairie Acres and Vincennes. The Farmers Market in Vincennes, 2 days earlier, also had no Indiana melons. From Indiana Farm Journal:Mike Horrall, Melon Acres, in northern Knox County, says that they were late getting cantaloupe and watermelons into the field due the wet spring. As a result, cantaloupe are running about two weeks behind, and so are watermelons. If you buy a watermelon for the Fourth of July, it likely isn't form southern Indiana. Horrall expects to be harvesting watermelons in late July this year. But, to give credit where deserved, the sweet corn was some of the best and if it was not sold the day it was picked, they charged $2.50 a bakers dozen. Cant beat that anywhere.
