My mom was going to give me her 2003 Impala, but it was leaking oil like a sieve, so she took it to Reber's. They seemed to fix _most_ of the oil leak problem (more later).Unfortunately, she also told them to look for anything else that was wrong with the car. They told her it was fine. Which is probably why I have a list of repairs that total almost $4,000.The driver front wheel bearing hub assembly was messed up and so was the outer tie rod. When driving the car, the steering wheel shook and the car made a distinct clunking noise. Eventually the ABS light came on, and I took it to Car-X in Waukegan, which found this, a leaking power steering rack, and a leaking power steering pump. So, they ended up fixing all of this. Unfortunately, the ABS light was a separate issue and turned out to be a faulty module (ouch), so the module was not an obvious problem that Reber's should have noticed, but anyone who had the car on a lift would have noticed leaking steering fluid and if they inspected the wheels for excessive play, it would have been impossible to miss the tie rod end and the bearing.Next up on the list, the transmission was leaking fluid. It was _just_ low enough that it was starting to whine and slip. Not only was the pan gasket dripping, but but both axle seals were as well. I paid for a transmission service (fluid and filter change, which also involves cleaning the pan and new gasket) and both new axle seals. They were all weeping red transmission fluid, so again, impossible to miss on a lift. Reber's didn't notice. This totaled over $400. Fortunately, the noise and slip are gone after the service at Car-X, so I don't think it was seriously damaged.Next, the power windows went out and the cause was determined to be ripped/burned wiring and a broken master switch. Okay, we'll give Reber's the benefit of the doubt because these worked at the time I got the car.The car needed new tires. Reber's could have mentioned that, but didn't.Upon inspection, the front tires were going bald and had abnormal wear from alignment and broken suspension issues mentioned before. The rear tires were nearly 7 years old and had cracks in the sidewall.I ended up replacing all four of them at Pep Boys because they had Definity HP 800 tires on a Black Friday sale. The battery (which I'm not sure where mom had it put on, so I don't know if Reber's can be blamed for part of this) was entirely in Chinese, like, even the "brand". Also, it tested bad and I replaced it with a Champion Absorbent Glass Mat battery on sale at Pep Boys. The front valve cover gasket was rotten and throwing oil, causing a burning smell. When Car-X told me about it, they said "We can fix it, but GM will replace it at the dealer for free because it's part of an open safety recall.". Not only did Car-X tell me what the problem was when they looked at it, they told me to go somewhere else and get the part for free. Very cool, and honest!I'm hoping that after all of this, I can drive the car for a while, but Reber's returned it in a state where it was not only dangerous to drive, but required thousands of dollars in additional repairs in order to be okay again.I was in the repair shop in Waukegan so often after Reber's said this car was perfectly okay, that I ended up getting $120 worth of $20 off coupons at Car-X, and they all know me by name now.So do you want to go to Reber's?I had a phone call with the manager there, and he said he'd talk to them but "Didn't know what I had done to the car." since it left his shop. (Uh huh....) Like all of this could have possibly happened in the 100 miles since they saw it.I report, you decide.
