Last night, around 8 PM, I went to the Costco gas station in Evansville to fill up our small RV. I left the engine running due to past concerns about it not restarting. After pumping nearly 22 gallons, a young man approached, blocking me in between the fuel pump, the RV, and the gas hose. He sternly told me, "You need to turn the vehicle off." Although he didn’t identify himself, he appeared to be a gas station attendant—tall, with black hair and glasses, dressed in a yellow vest.
Initially surprised, I looked for an exit, but he quickly raised his voice, saying, "NOW!" in an authoritarian tone. I asked if he was a police officer, and he responded "it was federal law to turn off the vehicle while fueling". When I said I was leaving and hung up the pump, he repeatedly insisted, "It's federal law."
As I attempted to leave peacefully, he continued to follow me, quoting the supposed law. I asked where this was posted, but he refused to provide any information, repeating, "It's federal law." I then walked to the side of my RV to get in and left calmly.
This incident marked the second time in a month that a Costco gas station attendant had raised their voice at me. Earlier this month, after fueling my wife’s vehicle, it wouldn’t start. As I tried to troubleshoot, an attendant insisted, "You need to move it," claiming my vehicle was blocking others. I was surprised, as I believed people could drive around it while fueling.
I explained that my wife and kids were inside the vehicle and that it wasn’t safe to get them out in such a busy area. I was also uncomfortable pushing the vehicle without power steering or brakes. Despite my concerns, he insisted I push it out of the way. I finally told him he should have asked if I could move it rather than commanding me to do so. I mentioned I had called AAA and that they would be there shortly, then safely sat back in my vehicle. He walked off, visibly angry.
Minutes later, a manager approached to inquire about the situation. After I explained, he apologized for the attendant's behavior and offered to get a jumper box, but I declined since AAA was already on the way. They arrived shortly after and successfully jumped the vehicle, after which I replaced the battery.
As a retired first responder and honorably discharged veteran, I was taken aback by the attendants’ demeanor. At this point, I'm reconsidering whether to fuel at Costco again, as we typically spend around $10,000 a year there in fuel. While I understand there may be rules about leaving vehicles running, I find it hard to believe it constitutes federal law, especially since we always left our vehicles running while fueling as first responders. I also know that posing as an officer is illegal.
If someone addresses me respectfully and identifies themselves, I will gladly follow their rules, if appropriate. However, if approached in a threatening tone, I might respond differently.

Lynnville just had cheaper Casey's gas prices than CostCo & Henderson beat them by 15 cents per gallon. They aren't always cheapest but gas is real good. No diesel & won't get any.

I used my Costco credit card here at the pump on 12/31/23 and I believe a card reader was applied into the pump, because I only use my credit card at Costco. Beware if paying at the pump. I used the row of pumps farthest away from Costco and the last pump in that row. I suggest paying at the attendants booth if that option is available.
