We went to look for a cat to adopt and were immediately welcomed into the shelter by Emma! Her face lit up as she asked us what we were looking for, answered all our questions and walked us through the shelter. She listened, knew the cats and their personalities and was able to point us in the right direction. It didn’t take long for us to connect with the one we would fall in love with! Emma was perfect! Her passion, patience and love for animals was felt! All the staff there were more than helpful, knowledgeable and extremely friendly! I would highly recommend anyone looking to rescue a pet to visit the DeKalb County Animal Humane Shelter. We will definitely be back!

Love this shelter, got my cats from here ever since I was a kid. New facility is great. The staff are very nice and knowledgeable, they really care about the animals.

I adore this shelter..They genuinely care about their animals. I have been rescuing and training dogs for many years. I have dealt with many shelters. They far exceed any I have dealt with previously. There is only one employee I am not fond of because of her tendency to gossip..they know who she is. They tolerate her.

I'm so very sad to write this. I have struggled all day with my disappointing interaction with the shelter today. I will try to be brief.
I have adopted before. I have had several dogs in my life and they have all lived long full lives with me, being loved and spoiled. I stopped in with last night 15 minutes before they closed not realizing they close at 4, so I just asked if we could see some pups in their kennel. The gal let us see them, great. She told us to come back today to interact. Super. I went home & filled out an application in the meantime. I left work early today and arrived a half an hour before closing. All the pups had been adopted, which was a bummer, but I can understand. Other folks probably had applications in before us and had been looking for pups for a while, we weren't really looking, we were just interested in the breed. No problem. I asked if we could take a look at the other dogs that were there at the shelter. I had been there before. I figured we would just walk down the hallway and see who they had there. See their personalities.
What was upsetting to me was that an employee in the back shouted to the gal at the counter that they just locked up the dog hallway so we couldn't go back there. I know it's not my business, I know I was a guest, but it felt rude, wrong and made me feel like I was at a dog prison. I'm sure many people there are volunteers, or don't get paid much, but the hours on the door say open until 4pm. The dogs don't get to go home for the weekend. It broke my heart and made me feel like I shouldn't donate there again; but also that I want to rescue all of the animals from the people who just want to shoo patrons away.

I had the best experience adopting my new fur baby! The staff was so friendly, attentive, and the whole shelter was very clean.
I showed up early and saw everyone working together to get ready for the day. It was truly a warming experience!

I have adopted three cats from Dekalb Humane and each time the adoption process has been flawlessly smooth. You can really tell that the new building and management have made such a positive change in the care that the animals receive! I will definitely be adopting from here again and look forward to adopting a dog in the future as they put great time and effort into making sure they live the best life they can while they’re there. Truly the best shelter I have been to and look forward to volunteering!

The Dekalb Humane Society is truly an amazing safe haven for our furry friends. I recently adopted two sister kitties. Many thanks to Reagan and foster mom Jennie for loving these babies until I could! It’s been a perfect experience.
