Came here for the first time and it was simply amazing!! My grandson really enjoyed himself, unfortunately I wasn't able to cross where there were stone or planks of wood because it was slippery. I don't mind getting dirty but I'm not willing to fall and hurt myself. Also the stairs going down to the waterfalls were somewhat difficult because it had mud & leaves piled on the steps. I'm an older woman with some difficulty issues. So I really hope that someone looks into this and make it fun fo all.

Beautiful scenic state park, Best know for its waterfalls in the upper and lower dells, worth the hike to see them, the trails have stairs Not easy hike for anyone with mobility impairment If you wear or bring shoes that you don't mind getting wet you can get much closer to the waterfalls Also in lower dells some parts of the trail cam be a bit muddy, ample parking, rest rooms vending machines outside of restrooms and a Picnic area are located above the dells. This park is typically less crowded than the nearby starved Rock state park.

If it were possible I would give the State a "0" for the deplorable condition of the roadway going into the park. It isn't a roadbed but a complete series of hole from one side to the other and one end to the other... State won't consider a fee per car but will let the roads be in this condition... what is wrong with them!!!! Shame on you State of Illinois

This park is Beautiful. The waterfalls were amazing... Seeing the waterfalls was one of the best parts of this trip. It's great place to explore with kids and pets. The trail is really fun to walk. I would suggest to get there early on Saturdays. It becomes extremely busy after 10:00am. Warming: There are steep stairs.. it's wasn't to bad for us but can be an issue for another group.

Hidden gem. Nearby the famous Starved Rock State Park, this park is typically less crowded, and is beautiful all times of the year. The ravines are really fun to walk in and see the waterfalls. I recommend this to everyone.

This is a beautiful and relaxing state park. Very nice for a relaxing hike. The park has a lot of deer and was originally called Deer Park. Check out their website for opening hours and to see if they're closed for hunting season! There are almost 2000 Acres in the park, including dells, forests, and prairies. Don't miss the canyon and Cascade Falls. The canyon has beautiful moss. There are lots of beautiful flowers here in the spring.

#THANKYOUTHURSDAY We have been so thankful for good hikes this year and getting outside! My husband and I visited Matthiessen State Park with our Lucky girl a few weekends a go when it was really randomly warm out. It's about 1.5 half from the Oak Park area to get there. We wanted to really enjoy the day and weather so we got here about noon. The main parking lot by the main trails was closed due to capacity being reached before we got there. The parking lots were stressful. There were SO many cars parked in random spots- looks like everyone had the same idea! If you kept driving from the main lot you would get to the overflow parking lot with access to less crowded trails. This actually was a blessing in disguise because the trails we were on were really not crowded at all. One of my friends actually was at the main trails the same weekend and said it was unbelievably crowded. Crowded trails make the experience extra difficult nowadays because of COVID precautions so I recommend going to the second lot to start your hike during this time. The trails were well marked and maintained. The trails we were on were also an easy level. They are horse-friendly! There were some incline/decline parts that make it difficult with a pup but it wasn't too bad. We hiked an easy 3 miles, stopped half way through and had a small picnic lunch. Lucky, our pittie loves swimming so we also let her jump in the river our trail led us too. Such a great spot to stop for a break! Overall, we enjoyed our time here! We are excited to come back and check out the main trail hopefully next year some time :)
