Adopted here, but likely don't do so again. I adopted and then was told my cat had not had an fiv test, after I mentioned she was coughing. They said she never presented with a cough and we went back to Wheeling. She tested positive and they sent me home with fortiflora. After she was still having issues, I again called them and they offered to have me go back to Wheeling a second time to pick up stronger meds. I declined, saying I felt like they were throwing things at a board until it stuck. I took her to my own vet, and she's now on 4 meds, for an ear infection, eye infection, and diarrhea. In addition to all of this i have a non fiv cat in my home already, and I wish I was told but when I questioned why she wasn't tested and why I wasn't told she had fiv, I was told there are no laws that require them to tell adopters and unless an adopter asks, they don't do the test, as it costs more, which says to me, the adopters of her 5 babies also likely won't know she has fiv.
Be aware and do your research and ask fortin fiv test. Make them do what they should be doing, the vet bill was $250, so that I was told she had no issues, and fiv cats take longer to heal, I find it hard to believe she even ready for adoption.
Update: one of the managers did reach out to me to refund the adoption fee but also claimed the cat is adopted never presented with any issues, stating she was with them for at least a month without an fiv test. They offered to do a stool sample and follow up care and to take her back, but my issues with that are one, she's already on for meds and two who has gas money to drive almost an hour there and back, for issues, that shouldn't have been missed. Upped my review to 3 for the refund, but this cat isn't out of the woods yet. For anyone telling me every animal has issues, I just wish they would have been more transparent about what I was getting into, ESPECIALLY with the fiv (I already have another cat in my home)...
2nd update: treating both cats now for giardia, as the one I got from here was positive. This place have me two rounds of meds (one for resident cat) and plan to do retesting, but she was definitely not ready to be adopted out given the fact that she has giardia and wasn't tested for fiv. This has been exhausting honestly.

I’ve adopted two cats from this place and both had serious illnesses before they both had to be put down for diseases they allegedly did not have when I adopted them Of course I loved them both but I had to spend a lot to treat them and eventually have both put down. One had feline HIVwhich I had been assured he was free of

Everyone who works at Heartland loves animals and puts their needs first. Any animal that arrives at Heartland has won the shelter lottery. I have experienced this firsthand as a volunteer and as someone who has adopted from them. I'm not randomly writing a review based on other old reviews like some idiots.

I recently fostered and adopted with Heartland and couldn’t be happier with the process! The staff was super helpful throughout the foster process and always available for questions and super responsive. They also made the adoption process super easy when we decided to keep Rosa as our own! I couldn’t say better things about Heartland, they’re a great shelter and such an important value add to our community!

This animal shelter is truly one of the best places a homeless animal can be on its way to a forever home. The staff and volunteers truly love each and every animal that comes through the doors, and everything they do is to make their lives as wonderful as possible while in their care. They do play groups, relaxing music during nap time, enrichment activities, and provide limitless support to their foster families. The flood was a tragedy, but they're still rescuing and saving lives. I've fostered dogs and volunteer. This is a community you want to support and become a part of!

Heartland Animal Shelter sets the standard for the most kind and compassionate setting for animals seeking their forever homes! I am constantly impressed by the loving care the animals receive, and the thoughtful way staff and volunteers respond to the unique needs of the cats and dogs. Heartland rescued a dog that was a stray and she was my loving and grateful companion for many years! I would highly recommend Heartland Animal Shelter! Don’t shop! Adopt!

We love Heartland! The facility is beautiful and the staff and volunteers work SO hard to keep everything clean and organized and the animals healthy and happy. Their volunteer program is wonderful; they have so many different types of opportunities volunteers can participate in, and they have a great system for signing up for shifts. The team is very dedicated to ensuring all animals go to the best homes possible. While shelter life isn't ideal for any animal, they really go to great lengths to ensure the animals in their care have a life that is as calm, social and enriching as possible.

Adopted 2 cats from here, 1 was an older one and 1 was a 3 week old little. They are best friends after only 1 week together. The entire team at heartland made the whole process easy and seamless! We are first time cat owners and they walked us through everything necessary and gave us enough toys/accessories to last a lifetime! By far the best experience we could have asked for! And they took extra time to show us a liter of puppies that had just arrived, recommend them HIGHLY . Could not ask for a better experience from start to finish! Even post adoption they follow up to assure everything is going well! Teri has been a huge help to us in accommodating these guys!! 10/10 experience

Both of my experiences at Heartland Shelter were fantastic. I adopted a black kitten in December 2023, then came back to find a companion for her this May 2024. The staff was extremely helpful in finding a friendly kitten match, the facility was clean, and most of the cats roamed freely in rooms. They seemed happier than I’ve seen at other shelters. My two girls are already getting along after 3 days of bringing the new cat home. They’re still supervised at all times, but when I separate them, they both sit on opposite sides of the door and meow playfully at one another, including some purring. My resident cat was a little territorial at first, but I think she learned how friendly the new cat was and is accepting her more every day. I constantly see progress the more they interact. I recommend Heartland to anyone adopting a pet, and will come back when I plan to adopt more.

Heartland is a very special place of love for animals thanks to their amazing staff and volunteers. There are many ways to become involved. You can donate monthly, bring in newspapers, volunteer in many ways, foster dogs and cats, and adopt an animal when you're ready.

The staff and volunteers at Heartland Animal Shelter are so friendly and helpful. We were looking for a cat for a while and this shelter was one of the kindest and most helpful.
Thank you to Jenny, Amanda and Barbara for all of their help in helping us find a new member of our family!!
