Irish sweaters are unique handmade items, many of which are one of a kind. The patterns come from the ancient Book of Kells, and they denote a family clan or village in Ireland. Fishermen used to go out wearing their oiled wool sweaters bravely showing their clan, in case of encountering storms. If they perished, their bodies and respective village could be identified by the sweater pattern.
Nowadays, sweaters can be identified by county in Ireland. Many are made by hand on two needles, some made on a loom, but all made in Ireland by talented craftswomen.
