I know several will not agree with a 5 star but from my experience and just moving in I am rolling with my own thoughts and opinions. The office staff, the maintenance, the affordability has provided me with a great experience thus far. If you're looking for a place with the glitz, glamour and all the bells and whistles then Hollywood is just a few thousand miles away. If you're looking for an affordable home during especially this day in age while still able to put dinner on the table this is the place to call home. Don't forget to stop in the office once in a while and spoil the ladies with some red bull and donuts. You're sure to make their day if you do. Thank you Hunter star and staff for a great experience so far.

I went on a tour here and enjoyed the units. Staff was super friendly, and the office was well kept. However, they didn't have a unit available as soon as I wanted to move in, so I had to go with a different company.

I rented from HunterStar for four years, with two of those years in the apartment I’m reviewing. While I appreciate that they had the legal justification to withhold a portion of my security deposit and that I was late on rent once, I want to share my overall experience.
When I first moved in, the apartment wasn’t cleaned properly. Items from the previous tenant, including a broken lamp and a dirty shower curtain, were still there. The carpet was also unclean, which I had to address myself. Additionally, the tub was so clogged that I couldn’t use it for about a week, despite submitting multiple work orders. I eventually had to unclog it myself.
During my stay, I had to deal with a flea infestation, which was blamed on me despite having an indoor-only cat. There was also an unfounded accusation of a fly infestation, and I received a late-night call (9:30 PM) regarding this, which was unnecessarily stressful.
While there were positive aspects of my time renting from HunterStar, the maintenance issues and the way certain situations were handled left me disappointed.

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE people to rent with. They don’t care about you. They only want to pocket your money. They don’t reply to emails. They don’t communicate with you. If I could rate them a zero, I would.

I have rented with Hunterstar for 3 years now, this is my final year. Despite the lack of central A.C. (which we signed up for) this was a good experience. The problem a lot of people seem to have stems from how they treat management and maintenance. These people, if you are kind and understanding, will make efforts to fix things immediately, and make sure that you are happy. We had more than a handful of serious problems with our unit that stems from its age, that was frustrating but understanding. Our furnace died our first year, and our hot water heater died last year. Within 48 hours, our furnace was fixed, and within a few days we had a new hot water heater.
These guys provided good service to me and my roommate. I don't love the idea of paid parking, and I don't like that some issues may have taken longer than others, but if you are understanding they will be too. If you're looking to rent in DeKalb, I was very happy with how I was treated. Whenever I went into their office, everyone was super friendly. They even made an exception once or twice because of issues I was having. Maintenance went above for me without me having to ask. The guy said to me on multiple occasions "Hey, I have this part at my shop, can I come back in a few hours" when I was expecting him to call it a day and come back another time.
Overall, I was really happy. Things could have been better, don't get me wrong. I think they can gouge you a little, and I HATE the tow service here in DeKalb. But I was happy with the way Hunterstar handled the majority of my calls. 4.5 stars (No option for 4.5).

I called the office frustrated about some of the things on my account and Katie happened to be the one I spoke to, she was understanding and very helpful. She made sure I had peace of mind before we got off the phone. Thank you Katie !!

I wish zero stars was an option, when I moved in it was it was absolutely disgusting- under the washer, dryer and stove were ridiculous. really got the landlord special when it came to cleaning. i recently passed my lease on to someone else and the apartment was left in better condition from when I first moved in and was still penalized for things I didn’t do such as cracks in the walls. to make matters worse the office employees gave inaccurate information which cost the new tenant and I even more money. if you’re a college student please be careful as they take advantage of you!!

Was disappointed. They said remodeled. If so a really poor job. Expensive for what they showed. $200 over their web site prices.

Pretty simple. They have a 2.6 average rating and have been reviewed 100+ times. The owner tries so hard to cover himself up by replying to the bad reviews, but unfortunately for him taking one look at the rating is enough to steer people away. His usual tactic in the beginning of the lease (during inspection) is to mark everything down as "in good condition" quickly and ding you for it during the inspection when moving out (a story I have heard many, many times). Keeping tenants happy isn't his number #1 goal.

My building is in a great location for a NIU student. It is right on campus only about 5-10 minutes away from any part of the campus. Especially great locations for students without cars because it’s located 3 min away from the central bus stops like Dusable and HSC. Plus there’s an in unit washer dryer, and dishwasher which is sooo convenient. This being said, all of these great perks and yet the place is still super adorable. Also Hunter Star Properties has the nicest staff members and they are very helpful. Whenever we need maintenance, they are always very quick and seem to be quite knowledgeable. They also have give aways and opportunities to get money off on your rent or gift cards. They really do the most for their tenants. Also my building is always clean. It might get a little dirty but usually by that time they have the halls and carpets cleaned within a week so it’s never noticeably messy or dirty.

Worst landlords ever. Don’t rent from this place and don’t trust any of the five star reviews. They are extremely difficult to work with and try to get as much money out of you as they can. They have a monopoly on cheap college living and they treat you poorly. Don’t rent from them.
