Beautiful Mansion in the heart of Chicago right by McCormick Place. The bed and bedding were super comfortable. My only complaint was Netflix wouldn't work. Breakfast was fantastic. I would definitely stay there again.Walkability: Walkable to McCormick Place.Food & drinks: Food & drinks were very good in the area, especially Gibson's.

The bed was most comfortable. The location was perfect. Off street parking. The gardens were beautiful and inviting. We had the entire common room to ourselves in the evening, we played checkers and had cocktails inside because it was raining outside. Breakfast the next morning was perfectly delicious. The whole stay was relaxing and refreshing.Rooms: Very comfortable bed and bathroom. Not very good water pressure, but, nice shower.Nearby activities: The convention center is only two blocks away, and lots of restaurants and bars within walking distance.Safety: We felt very safe staying here.Walkability: Everything is within walking distance.Food & drinks: Any kind of food and drink you want is within walking distance.Noteworthy details: The prettiest yard in Chicago. Very inviting and comfortable.

Beware before making a reservation - you might not actually get your money back if you cancel. While I cancelled my reservation last year well before the 30-day limit and received confirmation of my cancellation, my deposit was not actually refunded. Numerous phone calls and e-mails have failed to resolve this. I was looking forward to potentially booking this place in the future, but now will avoid at all costs

TL;DR: They ghosted me and I've had to find temporary accommodations elsewhere. I showed up at my scheduled check-in time, and there was no one there and the door was padlocked. There were no instructions, either via email in advance, on the website, or at the location.Over the next several hours I have called, messaged, and emailed the hotel and got no response. I've had to walk around (chicago is Not pedestrian-friendly and this place is in a food desert) to find wifi and arrange a different place to stay, out-of-pocket, but this is only temporary. I hope that they will get in touch and remedy the situation for the rest of my stay, but it's unacceptable to have a hospitality venue be closed and unavailable during the time of a booking! Based on this experience so far I cannot recommend this place at all.

Currently sitting at breakfast, which is cereal, milk, and raisins (we were told “European style” parfaits are made with milk). We are the only two guests, yet the only staff member who is here is nowhere to be found. I’ve had to run around to look for him every moment of this stay (I even had to wait at the door, knocking and ringing the doorbell, for several minutes, before I could even check in), and the other workers around the house just act like we don’t exist. It seems like the house is preparing for a large event, but if caring for two guests would be too much in the process, I figured reservations would not have been available, but that is just my opinion. The house is gorgeous, historic and beautiful. Like other comments say, it’s not the Marriott, so the blinds don’t open, and the TV is small, but its charm is nice, and the location is super convenient! There are so many details tucked away in this place, and it’s so rare to be able to stay in a place like this. If the staff cared more about their current guests, maybe this wouldn’t have been such a sad visit. $400+ for a night here seems kind of ridiculous, if this is the treatment we get.Rooms: Luxury room is pretty small, but again: you’re in a historic home. Things are a bit old and creaky, but it was character!Walkability: Close to McCormick Center and Wintrust Arena, relatively close to train stations. Beautiful grassy area around to just walk around and live your Secret Garden fantasy.Food & drinks: Site advertises “complimentary snacks”— do not expect those. Water costs $2.50/bottle, so bring your own! Breakfast seems to depend on how much the staff likes you, based on these reviews. We got “European style”, DIY parfaits: milk, honey, raisins, and granola/nuts.

A really good choice. Know what you're getting into - this isn't the Hyatt, nor is it the Holiday Inn. There are no in-room fridges or microwaves. The floors creak, and the bulbs don't all work. There are no vending machines, and no elevators. But what you ARE getting! A quiet place or rest & relaxation. There are 11 rooms, so there aren't crowds, there is no noise to deal with, everyone who is here belongs here. There's a delightful gated patio/lawn area in back - perfect for relaxing. There are bikes for cruising. The building & rooms are clean, beautifully antique (predates the Chicago Fire!) and the service is great. David cares about his guests, and does a stand up job as host.I'll definitely be back!

This is a wonderful, stately old mansion that has been beautifully restored. All the common areas were fantastic inside and out. Unfortunately there was lack of attention to details in our room. There was only one wine glass in the room, no hand soap in the bathroom. These were quickly corrected. One of the lamps had no bulb. There were brackets for some type of window dressing that was no longer there, leaving only plain blinds. Lastly, the furniture was a hodge podge of different styles, none of which were appropriate to the period, which detracted from what could have been a more luxurious experience. None of these are major complaints. Just things that could have been better, hence four stars rather than five. The service was very good, as was the breakfast. David was a gracious and accomodating host. There is free, off street parking as well.

A boutique hotel with just 13 rooms, rooms are old but big and classy. They have a set breakfast plate. Good for corporates who's planning a show at McCormick and looking for a place at walking distance.

I don't understand how this place has such crappy reviews. David the host was absolutely wonderful. We stayed in room 24. It was super clean and the bed was comfortable. Breakfast was delicious. Will definitely be staying here in the future!

Gorgeous property, exceptional service. The Prairie District has always held allure. The restoration of the Wheeler Mansion is beautiful from mansard roof to mosaic floors-- and all the faucets and knobs in between. To ease the stay, David, manager and sole pandemic staff person, arranged every comfort. He set up croquet on the lawn; he plated tasty breakfasts. On my last day, David saved me from a rainy walk and ferried me to the El. My friends and I felt as pampered as original Wheeler residents.

Don't do it. It's as uncomfortable as it is beautiful. I really don't understand what all the good reviews are for. The main complaint I saw was about the staff, but I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful and attentive, though there's literally only one person for everything. It's a beautiful old mansion and really cool to look at. It even had a gorgeous garden. Here's why it's great for looks but not for comfort:- It's a 3-floor walk up. Not disabled friendly. No elevators. No ramps.- No thermostat. If you want more heat, you have to plug in a faux fireplace. Or use one of their embarrassingly old extra blankets.- There are no standards like fridge, ice machine, microwave, snacks, beverages, etc.- The keys are literal metal keys that also open the door to the building. And not smoothly.- The furniture is old too. I did not use the wardrobe because it was so old and heavy, it wobbled forward when I opened it and the door was so front-heavy, it felt like it was going to tip over on top of me. The desk was cute, but the lamp had no bulb.- The water has no pressure. In order for the shower to properly function, I had to put it on a narrow pulsing stream.- Bugs. Day 1 millipede. Day 2 yellow jacket.- The worst problem for me was waking up in the middle of the night to the whole place shaking like an earthquake. This happens periodically from God only knows what, and the China cabinet in the hallway rattles with enough noise to wake you up (and I don't wake up easily). I lost a lot of sleep while working a trade show, which was really a huge problem.Visit this place. But don't stay here.

I wish I could live here! It was so gorgeous and the room was done up so well. David even got up to make us breakfast in the morning, which was delicious!! Parking was a little tricky but other than that our stay was amazing! Close to major venues near the city but still quiet. My husband and I will definitely come back!
