I have taken a couple classes at Lillstreet, and both times the process was the same; I signed up for a class, I was given an invoice with no specified payment due date, and the initial email gave no indication when the payment is due. Both times I assumed I could pay the day of the class start date, and both times I did so, and the person in the front didn’t tell me this was not their preferred method. I was still able to maintain enrollment in the class both times
Last month, I received a scholarship for a painting class. The initial email gave no specific due date, and given my previous experiences, I assumed I could pay the day of the class because I was confirmed to be enrolled and was never told otherwise. I struggle financially (hence why I received the scholarship) and need the extra time to get money to pay the remaining balance. A couple days before the class, I went in my email and realized I had missed one email asking for payment, and this email was sent just one day before the date they never specified before. This was the one and only payment notification before they silently dropped me from the class. I admit I didn’t see this email initially, but I think it is a common and courteous practice to 1) explicitly give a due date in the FIRST email, 2) give more than one courtesy email about payment (and send it more than just one day before payment is due) and 3) give a written confirmation stating that you have been in fact dropped from the class. Because I didn’t see the one email, I had already bought my supplies for the class, and when I called today (the DAY before the class) I was told I was dropped from the class without my knowing. This is a confusing process, and I felt condescended to, like I should have known better. I sent a few emails to the scholarship coordinator, but I have been ignored for a few days now.
It’s also slightly ironic that because I missed an email, I’m swiftly dropped from a class I was awarded a scholarship for, but the same people who dropped me from the class haven’t responded to my emails…
I don’t like to leave reviews like this for a place I enjoy, but I really just don’t think this was a courteous or diligent process. I would appreciate if they were up front about their payment policies. It’s really disappointing and unforgiving, and now I’ve spent a lot of money on expensive oil paints.

Super disappointing 5 week intro to frame loom weaving class with the most passive instructor I’ve ever had. We also had a TA working who couldn’t answer a basic question I had and then said this is her first hand weaving project too, she was really just paid to chat with the instructor the entire time throughout all of the sessions. The instructor would have us come up to the front with any questions and barely circles around. They knew I am missing the last week but at the end of my last class focused on cleaning up the studio before time was up versus checking in to see how they could help me get out the door with my project today. I will not be coming back.

I love Lillstreet Art Center! I am currently taking a five week First Time Potter class there where I work on the wheel, trim, fire, and glaze pieces. The staff is incredible, their materials and facilities are impressive, they are the best in the buisness across Chicago! Could not reccomend enough.

I am a Bay Area ceramic artist who just moved to Chicago, a few blocks from Lillstreet. I’ve been so excited to learn more about the space. I came in today to ask about the process of becoming a member and the young person at the counter literally rolled her eyes and then spoke to me so rudely I was honestly more confused than hurt. I don’t think I have ever left an internet review before, but I was so thrown off by the interaction that I feel compelled to let the owner know about it. The young woman was so condescending that a gentleman standing behind her jumped in and started trying to answer my question, explaining that those who are taking a class have access to the space. When I asked if she happened to know what days the advanced wheelthrowing class takes place she said, “Well I’d think they are every day, right?” I’m genuinely just so confused by the conversation I had here. I think I will still try to enroll in a ceramics class and hope this was a one-off, but I am also contemplating looking elsewhere. Mostly I would like to say to the owner that this young woman should not have a job at the front desk, she is not representing your community well.

Signed up for a class over 6 weeks ago. Was excited to start, got everything ready for the class and show up on day 1 only to be told the class is cancelled due to low enrollment. No call, no email, no communication. Poor first impression and experience. Will not be back and will advise to stay away.

My experience at this vibrant hub of artistic expression was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment I stepped through its doors, I was enveloped by an atmosphere of inspiration and possibility. The center offers a diverse range of classes, from pottery and painting to textiles and photography, catering to artists of all skill levels.
I enrolled in a ceramics class, eager to try my hand at something new. The instructors, all accomplished artists themselves, were incredibly patient and encouraging, fostering a supportive environment where creativity could flourish. The state-of-the-art facilities and abundance of high-quality materials made every session a joy. What truly set Lillstreet apart, though, was the sense of community. Fellow students, ranging from young enthusiasts to seasoned professionals, shared their knowledge and passion, creating a collaborative and enriching experience.
Beyond the classes, Lillstreet hosts exhibitions and events that showcase the incredible talent within its walls. These gatherings are a testament to the center's mission of nurturing artistic growth and connecting people through art. My time at Lillstreet Art Center was transformative, leaving me with new skills, cherished memories, and a profound appreciation for the power of art to bring people together.
It’s way the best trip I have ever done in a while you will not going to regret it .

The first class I signed up for was First-Time Frame Loom Weaving with Meredith Donnelly for five weeks for $220. Meredith emailed us with links to their favorite local locations to purchase supplies and videos they created to use as tutorials if we needed help outside of class. Meredith was perfect for my learning style by having the class watch a demo of her doing new techniques and then we would practice them on our own. She also started the course with information about the history of weaving and provided you with a packet they curated containing all the techniques we were to learn! Jake Wobig was training as an instructor at the time and they brought their own unique insights to the class as well.
The second class I took was Beginning Watercolors with Jen Adams-Wells for 10 weeks for $440. I suggest taking an introduction to drawing class before taking Beginning Watercolors with Jen as there is little demo on drawing techniques unless you ask for assistance. Jen is always happy to help if you ask and walks around the class checking in on each student to see if they have any questions. A typical class setup with Jen is being introduced to a still life at the beginning of class and you using the rest of the time exploring the medium on your own and Jen there if you have questions.

A good artist doesn't mean a good teacher. Also, interns are working administrative positions here, so you get your art supplies pdf file half wrong. Issues with enough space in some classes from what I hear and occasional lack of hot water in the cleaning room.

I'm sad that I have to write this review of Lillstreet.I tested positive for Covid as a new session 5 week session was starting. I had just completed my first ever art session and was excited for a new session. I immediately reached out to the Lillstreet to ask about their policy. They said you can return to class when you test negative or they will issue a studio credit. I was still testing positive for class the following week and requested a studio credit. Weeks went by and they requested a picture of my positive Covid test, I sent a picture of the test. Then they wanted more pictures of more positive tests, that I didn't have at the time as I was not taking pictures of every test that I took, only what my job required to submit for return to office. Then Tikal Rivera, Director of Student Services, replied informed me that they would not offer a studio credit because I didn't follow the policy, despite me following all of the instructions that were provided to me when I shared the news of the positive test. I really wanted to become part of the Lillstreet community and it's frustrating that I have to come here to warn others of how they treat students.

I took two short classes here and really enjoyed both. The classrooms were spacious, with nice light, so a bit chilly, since it is in a charming old building. My teachers were both very nice and willing to help and answer questions. My fellow classmates were equally friendly, and I would return if I lived a bit closer, maybe when it warms up because I am very interested in future classes.

I love this place! I took John Fleck’s three week intro to acrylics class. I learned so much and it was an awesome experience. John is a great teacher. I also did a couples/friends pottery class this past Friday. Lizzie and Meagan were our instructors. Throwing pots is so much harder than it looks but Lizzie and Meagan were patient and funny. I wanted to get down on myself for not being an expert immediately but they were so kind and encouraging. TLDR: This place is awesome and the instructors are incredible.
