Hazel apparel has a lovely selection of beautiful clothing, accessories like creative colorful socks and scarves, great stocking stuffers for Christmas. They also offer free holiday gift wrapping which is so appreciated. The staff are pleasant, helpful and gracious, and you walk out feeling like you are a special customer. Thank you.

Love Hazel! They always have the cutest gifts, and their staff is so friendly. Great selection of candles, jewelry and home decor, and they always keep a great stock of seasonal items. I come here at least once a month to get something for my home or to give as a present to someone.

I’ve shopped dozens of times at Hazel and watched their growth over the years since living in Chicago in 2006. One time stands out the most in the clothing store, specifically: I walked in and needed to find something cute, affordable and practical (not a one-time use) outfit and Marissa immediately sized me up and made some suggestions and the outfit I put together was perfect for the event I was attending. I’ve worn the pieces (dress, bracelet [purchased at the other location, years prior] and earrings in differing ways over the years and everything is still in great shape.

While visiting some friends in Chicago, one of them took me here as they were such big fans of this shop. Everything was priced at what you would expect items in a boutique to be priced at. But don't let that keep you away. They have a great clearance/sale section with a wide selection of styles. I found a cute shirt (and a skirt, but the skirt was a little too pricy for me). If I find myself back in this neighborhood, I would definitely stop here again.

Very cool boutique with stocked-full sale racks. Lots of Cut Loose, Mavi and Down East brand clothing. I wish I would have stopped inside the larger location just up the street. They have a much bigger selection of clothing as well as gift ideas.

While patronizing this business on 5/11 to purchase a Mother’s Day gift, I witnessed an unfortunate and harmful microaggression against a fellow shopper. I watched an employee stop what they were doing behind the counter to approach the only man of color in the store. The man was looking around shopping just like myself and the others in the store. He was asked if he needed any help, the man politely declined. The employee walked away but continued to watch the only man of color in the store. It was blatantly obvious that he had been racially profiled. I suspected by his visually uncomfortable demeanor and laugh of disbelief that that he had realized why he was the only person approached. The man soon left the store. When I asked to speak to a manager I found out that the person in question turned out to be the owner of Hazel, so I disclosed to an employee what I had observed. Her response was as unsettling as the event itself. She suggested that the man was approached because he might have been “a neighborhood person” that the store was having trouble with. This confirmed my suspicion that the man was racially profiled, as well as how staff are trained to handle a situation like this – by approaching a customer and asking if they need assistance. My concern was further brushed off because the employee insisted the owner is the nicest man she knows. While I realize that he is probably a very nice man, this does not excuse unintentional racist behavior. I would like to continue supporting this business but will not be able unless they develop a better practice dealing with unconscious bias. I deeply regret not standing up for this man while he was still in the store but hope Hazel will take action to confront unconscious bias to prevent a situation like this from happening in the future.

I thought this place would be my new go to shopping spot but I had no idea how uncomfortable I would feel going in there. Right when I walked in i smiled and said hello to the sales lady behind the counter and she just looked right through me all indifferent. Not long after a white woman walks in and she was greeted happily by the same woman. So I tried to not make it a big deal and continued to peruse their items. Some were all right, others are cheesy and basically your typical overpriced "bohemian" yuppie. So right before I left there was a group of white folks that left and they were wished farewell. I wanted to test and make sure that I wasn't imagining discrimination so I turned towards the counter to look at the salespeople while I walked towards the door to give them an opportunity to acknowledge me, but nope. Nada. Makes me wonder what that's about. If that was unintentional well this is your opportunity to really ask yourselves as business owners and salespeople how you're treating or acknowledging your customers/people equally and check that elitist attitude.
