This place was really great, I am relatively new to coin collecting and the man gave me a amazing deal on the coins I got. I felt that they were really kind and passionate about their jobs. They also had a lot of coins to look at. It was a overall great experience

Extremely rude, especially the younger coin dealer. I brought in some of my father's collection that recently passed and he called them "probIem coins" not even acknowledging any of the good ones, which included a slabbed EF-45 1914-D Lincoln cent. I wouldn't recommend any person take their coins here unless you want to feel belittled as soon as you walk through the door. Just because your day didn't go great doesn't mean you should take it out on the customers that help make you.I walked next door to Subaks coins and the gentlemen treated me like a human being and acknowledged my father's collection for what it was. I recommend Subaks coins over this outfit any and every day of the week.

I checked online reviews and this place was TOP and highly recommended by many sources (even other dealers). But I still did my “do diligence” and went around to all the rare coin collectors and appraisers Downtown Chicago. Roughly all of them where either -$80 to +$20 of value of my coins compared to Harlan.I called our family banker at Northern Trust and within a few hours, he said his company sends their customers to Harlan.The whole experience of selling a family heirloom is a little nerve wracking and Manny (hope I wrote his name right) made me feel at ease with the whole process. Now my vacation here is paid off. Nice way to finish this trip.I even bought a few coins related to my birth year and the birth year of family members living and past, it’s a nice way to remember our Chicago branch of the family. I got to see different coins of US history… part of my family is from here. Manny didn’t have to take the time, but he did and I appreciated the time spent here showing me all these coins. He even said he was into comic book collecting (so am I), thank you for the knowledge shared ! :-) Next time I visit, I’ll stop by!

As a beginner coin collector, these guys spent time showing me coins, teaching me new things and sharing their passion for coins. The prices were very reasonable and they were very gracious with my naive questions. It was a pleasure buying from one of the oldest coin shops in the U.S. and from people that care about the business and their customers.

Fantastic place, not only for coins which are wonderful to see and enjoy. They also have original ancient antiques like ring or earrings o glassware original from Rome. I bought a silver ring with Athena carved, estimated dated around year 12 of current era! Just mind blowing…Oh, they gave me the certificate of origin.They are professional, knowledgeable and helpful. I like the place, is nice.Highly recommended, I have more than 10 years buying ancient coins from them

I want to give a huge Thank you to Michael Nottelmann.Michael greeted us with open arms today at Harlan Berk. He took time out of his day to greet my 9-year-old nephew and teach him a little bit about coins. Michael gave my nephew a Goody bag for FREE. This was filled with a bunch of amazing things that just got him hooked. Thank you for teaching the younger generation how and what to start collecting. I have dealt with HJB for a decade, and I can compare them with my personal experience at other U.S. and European dealers. All of my purchases have been ancient Greek silver coins. In this area, you are paying for professional expertise. Ancient Greek coinage is almost infinite in variety, and values can vary enormously, even between similar coins. In addition, forgeries here are common, and it takes a very professional eye and an ironclad guarantee to keep customers from making unfortunate choices. Their founder Harlan J. Berk is something of a legend in the world of ancient coins, and the currently active staff are excellent. As an example, a lot of their wisdom is currently shared for free in their Ancient Coin Podcast, which I recommend. For bullion or common coins I recommend shopping around, but for ancients, the combined resources and expertise of HJB certainly make it one of the leading firms in the world.
