Good morning,
On May 24, 2024, at 9:28 am, I visited the Family Dollar located at 3429 W. Diversey Avenue. Upon entering the store, the manager and an employee issued threats (please see video for evidence). As a result, the Chicago Police were notified due to the threats of bodily harm.
Local Laws Broken:
1. Assault: Under Illinois Compiled Statutes (720 ILCS 5/12-1), an individual commits assault when they, without lawful authority, knowingly engage in conduct that places another in reasonable apprehension of receiving a battery. The threats made by the store manager and employee fall under this definition.
2. Disorderly Conduct: According to Chicago Municipal Code (8-4-010), it is illegal for any person to engage in behavior that is likely to cause a disturbance or alarm to others. The threats issued by the store personnel qualify as disorderly conduct.
Federal Laws Broken:
1. Threats of Violence: Under Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 875(c), it is illegal to transmit any communication containing a threat to injure another person. Although this statute primarily applies to interstate communications, it sets a general federal precedent against making threats of violence.
2. Civil Rights Violation: Under Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 245, it is unlawful to interfere with an individual’s enjoyment of rights and services. The threats could be seen as an attempt to intimidate and restrict access to the store, potentially violating civil rights protections.
Apparently this same store manager felt threatened and filed a Police Report with the Chicago Police Department to have arrested if entered store again.
Chicago Pplice contacted due to threats of bodily harm.
Corporate office emailed twice about same store manager.

On May 16, 2024, at 10:15 am, I visited the Family Dollar store located at 3429 W. Diversey. Upon entering the premises, I was met with an alarming and unprofessional response from the Store Manager. The Store Manager proceeded to loudly declare her refusal to provide service, stating, “She’s the only one with a register, and she wasn’t ringing up my stuff. I don’t have to service you.”
Such behavior may potentially infringe upon federal and local laws governing consumer rights and discrimination. Under federal law, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin in places of public accommodation, which may include retail establishments. Additionally, local ordinances may further enforce provisions related to fair treatment and customer service standards.
The encounter not only resulted in my departure from the store without making a purchase but also left me feeling disrespected and unjustly treated. It is reasonable to expect a certain level of customer service and professionalism from retail establishments, regardless of their market segment. The conduct exhibited by the Store Manager was undoubtedly unacceptable and reflects poorly on the store’s overall reputation.
In light of this experience, I am inclined to take my business elsewhere, where I can expect a more welcoming and respectful environment. It is my hope that this incident will prompt necessary improvements in staff training and adherence to legal and ethical standards within the Family Dollar organization.

They didn't let me in because they were already closing and there were still 10 minutes left until they closed. I arrived at 9:50 and it was already closed.

I was just in here earlier today. It's been a rainy day so naturally I had my own umbrella with me. The cashier followed me outside and accused me of stealing it from the store. Apparently he thought I was suspicious because I didn't hear him say hello to me as I entered. I'm glad I didn't buy anything and give you business.
