If I could rate less than one star I would, this gym is greedy and tried to hide behind policy when they over charged my spouse by $60. Chris and John don’t know how to be decent community members, let alone genuine customer service people. Take your money and your time elsewhere, unless you feel like wasting both.

Love this gym! Great customer service, always upgrading their equipment, and the people that workout here take the gym seriously. An added bonus that they have a sauna and the option to grab a smoothie after your workout.

Was the victim of a robbery in front of the gym and the police requested video camera footage which would have caught the whole thing on camera.Turns out they were not working. Management claims it was temporary due to a power outage, but refused to inform whether the cameras were currently working or not. All I wanted was reassurance that the issue was fixed and the cameras were functional.Chris refused to take any action following the incident and claims it could happen everywhere. That is patently false however as plenty of businesses have reliable security systems on uninterruptible power supplies where it wouldn’t matter if there was a power outage. These systems aren’t expensive and a venue such as refinery should have no problem adding them, especially when they know the area can have crime issues at night.Additionally, why would people commit a crime directly in front of a security camera? Potentially because they knew it didn’t work. Does not bode well for lack of a repeat. The gym itself is fine. The locker rooms are dirty making the showers unusable. Good assortment of equipment and front desk staff and trainers are friendly. Their Les mills exercise bikes don’t have accounts paid for so all they are, are stationary bikes, which is pretty cheap. Classes are decent. It’s probably one of the best gyms in Champaign, but is below average when compared to offerings elsewhere within the same price range (Xsport, LA Fitness, etc.)

I just moved from Chicago and used to go to equinox which is always pretty clean and well stocked. I was afraid I wasn’t gonna be able to continue my routine but the refinery is better stocked than equinox and the people are much nicer! Very happy with the cost too!

I forgot to review the Refinery when I lived in Champaign - here goes:I lived on the 3rd floor above the Refinery for 2 years. It was. Amazing. Not only is the gym huge for a basement gym, it's never overcrowded, not too many gawkers and plenty of equipment. I could easily deadlift or clean/snatch on the platforms they had there. I was never competing for time. Always clean, nice folks, and super easy to get in and out of the parking lot.

Joined in early January 2021; still have an active membership.On-face, Refinery seems very nice -- acres of cardio equipment, a generous free-weight area, even some specialty equipment like a safety squat bar.In reality? The gym seems poorly-managed. The owner and most staff have no idea what their equipment is or does -- multiple instances of asking about specific bars or machines have resulted in a rejoinder to "ask Tony (the head trainer)". Most of the stiff bars are bent to a non-trivial degree, and I have regularly seen the gym's only deadlift bar in various squat racks -- a testament to the ignorance of the clientele or the negligence of the staff. The climate control in the gym is either faulty or intentionally subpar for cost-savings -- the free weight area is usually quite a bit hotter (as much as ten degrees) than any other part of the facility, and there is regular ice buildup on the ventilation shafts. When heavy rain occurs, the skylights (all in the free-weight area, and directly above the power/half-racks) leak profusely, disabling access to some equipment. There is even visible plant growth in one of the skylights. My impression of the gym, simply, is that it used to be great -- as the website and social media currently flog without surcease. Now, however, it seems as though the equipment is poorly maintained and the building itself is something of an afterthought. If owner/management took precautions to preserve the quality of their equipment and ensure a comfortable environment, this would certainly be the "best gym in Champaign" as it claims. As of now, however, this is a sad -- perhaps even reprehensible -- shadow of that status.
