i've been sitting on this review for months. it is now october 3rd. today makes 6 months since i adopted my darling effie on april 3, 2024. she was a sweet, energetic kitten that quickly fell in love with my other young cat, cookie. my older cat sonny became like a mentor for her. and of course she had my little dog koda to bully (i say this in jest). my fiance bonded with her rather quickly, being his first pet and the first one he participated in the adoption of. they were like magnets. she was HIS cat and he was HER human, just like how sonny and i are bonded. it was beautiful to watch that relationship flourish. to me, she became the daughter i couldn't have amidst a false pregnancy. she helped ease the depression of not being able to become a mother.
on may 2nd i entrusted my cousin to take care of her until my fiance and i were able to move into our new apartment in the following two weeks. things were fine. she was slowly acclimating to her temporary home and befriending my cousin's pets. the home was safe and comfortable. my kitten was being taken care of. she was lively, playful and comfortable. unfortunately, our move was delayed, but tabs were kept, updates rolled and we anticipated the day we would reunite with her.
well, on may 27th she began vomiting. my cousin monitored her and planned to bring her to the vet should her condition not have improved. she did improve, though. she was eating, drinking and playing. she snuggled up that night and the next morning i woke up to news that my cousin had found her lying on her bed, stiff, cold, and dead.
i know the suggestion is there that it may have been my cousin's fault or mine for her temporarily being out of my care but i ASSURE you that cannot be the case. all of the animals were vaccinated, well maintained and cared for. so how could she have randomly gotten sick and then spontaneously die? no, i'm not saying they directly killed her, but i believe the shelter is not actually examining the animals they bring in or fully treating them for existing health conditions before putting them up for adoption. i do not know how i missed all the concerning reviews from this shelter before even adopting effie, but it could have been overlooked due to our excitement to bring home another little furry friend. for that, i will always hold deep regrets.
i would highly recommend looking further into the negative reviews and experiences of others and please choose an alternative shelter to adopt from. i still hold her favorite plush toy and cry sometimes. i do not want any one else to feel the pain we did from losing her.

As a concerned neighbor living near Kay’s Animal Shelter in Arlington Heights, IL, I feel compelled to share my observations and experiences with this facility. Despite their large fenced-in property, I have never seen any dogs from the shelter being taken outside or walked by staff or volunteers at any time of the day. The gates are always closed, and the parking lot remains empty, indicating a lack of outdoor activity for the shelter dogs.
My concerns deepened when I reached out to Kay’s Animal Shelter to offer my time as a volunteer to walk the dogs and provide them with much-needed socialization. To my surprise, I was informed that they do not allow volunteers and are not seeking any additional help. This response contradicts the reviews claiming that the shelter is short-staffed, raising questions about their true staffing situation.
I find it puzzling how volunteers willing to dedicate their time and effort to socialize with the dogs would not be welcomed at Kay’s Animal Shelter. As a dog owner myself, I understand the importance of love, affection, and attention for these animals. The thought of multiple dogs not receiving the care and interaction they deserve is deeply concerning.
Despite these troubling observations, I want to emphasize that if you are considering adopting a pet from Kay’s Animal Shelter, please do not be discouraged by this review. Instead, let it serve as a call to action to save these animals from what feels like a restrictive environment. By adopting a pet from the shelter, you have the opportunity to provide a loving home and save a life in need.
It is my hope that Kay’s Animal Shelter reevaluates its policies and practices to ensure that the dogs in their care receive the love, attention, and outdoor activity they deserve. Every animal deserves a chance at happiness and companionship, and it is essential that the shelter prioritizes the well-being of its residents.

Yes, you may get a wonderful pet. My family did. Then we realized all Kay’s care about is money, certainly not good homes. Other reputable shelters check references, do meet and greets, call your vet if you have one, and try to make the best match for you, or you and your family. First one to complete bogus paperwork and hand over $, gets the animal. Stories about background are bogus. We were told two totally different “facts” from two different employees about our puppy. Most of these pets seem to come from neighboring states known for awful, but legal, puppy mills. Please don’t support them. There are so many wonderful, legitimate dog and cat rescues in the area.

I adopted my dog from Kay's when she was 7 months old. It's been almost 10 years since we brought her home, and she is still very healthy, very spry, and very happy. I can't imagine a more perfect dog for our family. Everybody was very helpful and kind. Her adoption included her microchip, her first puppy shots, her spay surgery and a first free visit with the vet. So we were all set to take home a very healthy puppy! Our dog, who we renamed Dahlia, is the best dog we could ever ask for. She has brought us so much joy over the past 10 years, and we are so grateful for Kay's Animal Shelter and other shelters that give dogs like our Dahlia a second chance at having a home. As for the negative reviews about never seeing dogs in the yard, I truly cannot imagine anything shady happening at this shelter. They let me go with our puppy out to the yard (with her leash on) and I remember the people telling us that there are many coyotes and foxes in the area, and they take the dogs out at very irregular times in order to keep them safe from the predators in the area! So I wouldn't take the 1 star reviews seriously. I know that my puppy was treated with compassion and respect and was healthy and was taken outside and in the yard regularly. She was basically already potty trained when she came home with us! About a year after we brought our Dahlia home, my sister had her first baby boy, and we were nervous at first about how Dolly would react, but the first time she met him, she licked him, a lot! She was very gentle with him, and when 3 more babies came along, she proved how good of a doggie she is and was gentle and sweet to them as well. So to anyone who is looking to bring a best friend home, I highly recommend this shelter. Adopt! Don't shop!

I would not even give 1 star!. Do not adopt from here!! Adopted a kitten which supposedly received all it's shots. The kitten was 4 months old. This place should be shut down!!! Found out from my vet that the kitten was very sick with several problems (ear mites, eye problems, respiratory problems, viral infection, to name a few) and probably never received the shots it should have received. I spent so much trying to help my kitten get well with medication and surgery but she never recovered and I had to put her down at 7 months. It made me sick that they could adopt out such a sick kitten. They should be shut down! All they care about is money. That is probably why you do not have to fill out an extensive profile when adopting from them. They dont' care about who wants to adopt as long as they get paid! PLEASE read all the reviews before you adopt from here. I see other people had similar experiences here. They probably paid for the good reviews.

I got my kitty from Kay’s Animal shelter in 2010. It is a small local shelter in the area. I still have my cat from Kay’s and she’s still going strong 13 years later.
