Not only does Purple Sage continue to be our "go to" favorite to buy at the Boise CoOp and Farmers Maket for remarkable herbs and greens for home cooking - and we do a lot of that as it is a passion that also keeps us sane in these crazy times - we discovered this year via the Boise Farmers Market that Purple Sage also raises lamb. We are as choosy about animal proteins as we are about all else we use - we want things to be locally sourced and sustainably raised and when animals are involved humanely treated. So trying Purple Sage lamb was a perfect fit for us. We chose lamb necks to braise in a spicy broth with ginger, green garlic (also from the Market) cumin and sichuan pepper and finished with cilantro (also Purple Sage). The dish has roots in Chinese cooking for Muslim populations in the NW part of China. A great recipe, as it turns out, but the even better discovery is how good are lamb necks as a braising meat. (Who knew?) Lamb is our favorite protein and since Americans consume on average less than 1# each / year it is not as much raised or available for domestic products. (Much of it for American supermarkets is imported from New Zealand and that has a completely different character than local lamb anywhere in the States.) Yet in all the years we have been cooking lamb, we had not tried necks until they popped up on the Boise Farmers Market "order from" list for Purple Sage. Such a great discovery. We have one of their shoulder roasts in the freezer waiting to be cooked into something delicious. And we'll be ordering more lamb necks too - this time to try an Italian recipe for red wine braising to serve with pasta and fresh peas - unless you beat us to them to order them all. A closing PS on the Boise Farmers Market in 2020. What the Market director managed to plan in quick pivot to make the market order ahead products ahead an schedule a time for drive through pick up on Saturdays in order to keep the Market as source for connecting local farmers and producers with their customers and vice versa is nothing short of innovative and well managed awesome effort thanks to her work and that of volunteers. Awesome is over used word, but here it applies. You can find out more about the Farmers Market here.

The herbs are amazing. So fun to cook with and to learn about them from Jackies helpful suggestions on the packages. I had to use dried thyme from the grocery store today because I ran out of the Purple Sage herb. It’s not the same AT ALL. I will be ordering again soon!!!!
