What a great hunting ranch nestled in-between lava beds of southern Idaho. Owner Mickey blocked a whole day hosting a youth group to come out and give it their best at shooting some birds. This was an experience some may never get and to see so many first roosters get shot in one day was an experience in its own.

If you want to pay an outrageous amount to hunt planted birds that don't fly worth a damn on a 20 acre field, than this is your place. I literally had to nudge a bird hard with my foot to get her to fly. Their website clearly states that there are hundreds of acres and ample birds both wild and planted to hunt. Needless to say I came prepared to work for my birds, but have ample shot opportunities, cover some ground and see lots of birds outside of the ones just planted that morning. Instead we were kept to a single small field and the only birds we flushed and harvested were those planted an hour before our hunt. As if that wasn't bad enough one of the birds didn't even fly, so the guide caught it wrung it's neck and put it in his game vest. We were done hunting in 55 minutes and pushed aside to make room for the next customers despite us paying for a full day hunt. Add to that he decided to bring his puppies for training on a supposedly guided hunt. I'm fine with my friends bringing their puppy for training on a hunt but it's pretty unprofessional for a guide to bring his new puppies that he "just started training last week" on a guided hunt. To top it all off when we went to settle up the owner was "surprised" went we tried to pay with a card despite their website stating they take cards, his exact words were uhhh I'll have to ask my daughter how to do that. Are you sure you can't just pay cash or check?.. Feeling very discouraged I politely voiced my concerns. The owners response was "huh well sounds like to me you had a decent morning next time I will try and make you a little more for birds." Sadly this is someone who lacks the true drive to effectively run their business and could care less about being a true sportsman and promoting fair chase and instilling good hunting practices. I will not be back and discourage anyone self respecting sportsmen from wasting their time and money with Western Spirit Pheasant Ranch.
